There is science to hypnosis. Unfortunately people always touch on things magicians do instead of the psychology of hypnosis.

The mainstream scientific community still doubt hypnosis as a real phenomena. It's safe to remain this topic under pseudoscience.
Hypnosis is actually a broad term for several trance-like states of the mind. Hypnotic susceptibility varies from people to people, there are people who can go into deep hypnosis, but most do not. There are people who simply cannot fall into any state of trance, it all depends on a persons' suggestibility or "gullibility". I know that one method, commonly used by psychologists and psychiatrists is to limit and control the stimuli of the subject to a minimal and to use subtle "suggestions" to the subject. Depending on the persons' susceptibility to the "suggestions" given to the subject, from very simple suggestions like moving the eyes, or breathing into more complex suggestions. Again it varies from person to person, and it does not work everybody.
Hollywood and "Magician's Hypnotism" actually derived somethings from real hypnotism, like the use of pendulum--which is a method. Historically, it was used by hypnotists. I have not encountered anyone in the field who use pendulums in modern times but I have been told that naa daw.
knsay maau ana dri?
i highly recommend to everyone interested in this subject to read this book
"Many Lives, Many Masters" is the true story of a prominent psychiatrist, his young patient, and the past-life therapy that changed both their lives.Dr. Brian L. Weiss was a scientist and psychotherapist, molded by years of disciplined study into a conservative professional

hypnosis is...not proven, i guess..not as proven and measurable like applied sciences and pure sciences like chemistry, physics. etc...i still believe it falls under psychology therefore is also part of science. to say that hypnosis is not real is like saying that "phobias" are not real...it is vague...but its definitely real.
for anyone interested in understanding hypnosis, please do research on NLP...or neuro-linguistic programming. its the study of influencing how the brain or the mind works through use of suggestive language.
i think its important to dispel fallacies about hypnosis.//such as: if youre hypnotized anyone can make you do things you dont want to do. that's kinda BS. but hypnosis is used widely, more than we know. its used by salesmen to influence their clients, doctors to help their patients, sometimes even criminals in influencing their victims.
some people who are good in conversational hypnotism are often good speakers and are able to sway the minds of a large number of people, and they are famous in history, some use it for good, some use their skills for bad. Hitler, Napoleon Bonaparte, Rasputin ( who held the Russian royalty under his sway during his time). Etc,,,
Nowadays, i suspect leaders of cults, terroristic organizations, activists, even the religious use some form of hypnotism to influence their members. BUt the most powerful form of hypnotism is self-hypnotism. this is when we convince ourselves to start believing something, or make our habits, so poweful that no one else can convince us we are wrong. For example when we say "I can never quite smoking! Its impossible!" When we have hypnotized ourselves to believe something to be absolutely true. Thats not pseudoscience.
