because all of games played on steam are NOT FOR FREE. They will not be releasing it for free. Hear me man, that's why there's a retail key. The free you were saying here is a free taste for lucky gamers to make them spread the news about dota 2. The will stand as the legacy of how good dota 2 was compare to its predecessor. They won't be releasing beta and retail if it's free, Thnk twice man.
I think you don't know a lot on playing on steam.
DOTA 1 is free cause it is only a map for Warcraft 3,. A modded map.
DOTA 2 is NOT. because it is a stand-alone GAME. Why do steam will require it to be played online if it is for free? huh?.
They require signing in to steam to make it secure from hackers. They won't be paying icefrog if it is for free, are we clear?

Huna-hunaa lang gud dota was not even free. It requires an original Warcraft but because nahack an warcraft mao na makaduwa ka for free... mao na gi-end na ni icefrog ang contact nya sa dota cause he want to have some benefit from it. Meaning naa ni price but because free daw ang dota 1(maps man gud ni not stand alone program like karun na dota 2) naglisud sila unsaon ang price kay if they make the price higher meaning it will cause dota 2 to sag.

Most of free to play games in steam are not so popular. Online type.
But dota 2 is different. It will have a price but not so expensive.

You must not know me to tell me that I must not know how Steam works. How old is your Steam account?

You seem to be out of touch with the current trend in PC gaming. There are a ton of games that are coming out that work off a freemium model. The new Mechwarrior. The new Tribes. Free no longer means low budget. Just because Warcraft 3 was not for free doesn't mean they cannot release Dota 2 for free. Warcraft 3 came out at a different time. If your only argument is that Dota 2 won't be free because they need to make money, you don't know the game industry. What is the biggest game on Steam? ... that's right ... a free game ... Team Fortress 2 ... also a Valve game.

Also since you seem to bring up all these game review sites, you should actually read these sites. Most PC game editors will tell you that Dota 2 ... is probably going to be free because that is where the industry and Valve is headed. That is where Dota 2 and CS: Go ... both Valve games are likely headed. Valve has only said that they have yet to announce pricing or a business model. That does not mean they are going to charge for anything.

In any case, this is a worthless discussion. Paid or not paid, the game will come so why bother arguing and playing armchair journalist.

actually guys there's no difference between the beta key and the retail key for dota 2. i won yesterday a dota 2 beta key from playdota.com and it said the key is the product activation code for the retail version. lahi ni ang situation sa dota 2 kay ila ning ilampurnas ang league of legends og HoN and they can only do that by making dota 2 free2play

also, let me just add that after activation, you will be asked to choose which dota 2 version to install: the dota 2 test version (which i think is the beta version) or the retail version, which is the full version of the game when it will be released in the market.
