22 European Union states, and the EU itself, have today signed the controversial ACTA treaty, which critics say could lead to severe restrictions on freedom and civil liberties online.

As Wired UK reports, at a ceremony in Tokyo, the UK, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden all agreed to adopt ACTA.

act of piracy like everything has its bad and good side, if not for piracy done on xerox by apple company, Macintosh pc won't be born, and if not for act of reverse eng'g done on Macintosh pc done by Gates's microsoft then there will be no windows system running our pc's, and the rest are history.
If you are on the other side that was affected badly by piracy, it must be very frustrating to hear comments like those written above, and by those who applauded piracy because it benefits them. and most probably imposed extreme laws that would prohibit such act thus the SOFA bill.
My views as always and same as before, intellectual property rights and act of piracy if viewed in a very simple manner, is no different on copyright and plagiarism, inventions and the patent that come with them. There many complex laws that govern those areas but one that stands out, was on patents, they expires through time, this was to prevent monopolizing the technology and the market, if you apply on patent particularly in the U.S. you need to submit details on the invention so that the law can protect it and after 10 yrs or a certain span of time, it will be open for public access so that other scientist can study, copy and create other applications for it. The given length of time is sufficient for the inventor to sell, and make money out if his idea. Can you imagine the world if Ford retains ownership of his engine idea forever?

I guest my point is that, a singer should be given span of time to make money out of his/her album, we will respect it, then we can all share them after on file sharing site, this will promote/encourage singers, movie producers to create move beautiful movies, songs cause they will not retain royalty on there product forever.

I believe this is fair and just.

i agree with most of your points bai. If part pa unta ta sa US, then possibly we wont support piracy (tungod taas nata og living standard). Like i said di ta jud ko support ani but lets face it, naa ta sa asia. 10-100 times nga mas gamay atong sweldo sa taga US (or any other first world country). The only reason na naa gihapon ning piracy sa ato kay tungod sa kamahal sa orig (+ politicians are also in it hehe). Wa may ganahan jud sa pirated bai (I personally dont like buying fakes), it's just our practical alternative.

ex. Imagine an aspiring Pinoy photog. Do you think he can afford to buy the newest software for photo editing? Maybe those who has sponsors can ($$$), but how bout kadtong wala (most of us by the way). & this is not just limited only to photography.


Like any type of business, there will always be competition. Walmart became who they are because they offer lower priced goods. Walmart created strategies to lessen their cost. Why wont software companies do it? Why can't they sell lower priced software? Competion in cost is the reason why piracy/file sharing is thriving. It might sound unfair & selfish but the sad reality is that most of our consumers don't mind what's being done behind producing a product.
