Trying to value my hard earned money not to act as a cheapo (palusot pa no)

Didto sa dpreview site, someone share his/her trick on how to acquire a cheapest D50 outfit. So hing adto ko sa Sears dala naku ang pricelist sa Staples nga nag presyo ug 404 ang D50 w/ 18-55mm kit lens. Akong gi check ilang display ug nakakita ko ug D50 with a tag price sale 650 from 699. So akong gi approach ang saleperson & asked for price match, ingon sya wait a minute akong pangutan-on ang manager then after a few minutes he get back with me with a deal. The price was 378 (D50 w/ 18-55mm kit lense) + 32 (sales tax) = 410. So i grab this great deal & return my 3 days old D50 w/ 28-80mm kit lense to Ritz w/o restocking fee. Now i can purchase a 50mm f/1.8 (amazon price = 110) & Sandisk 1GB Ultra II SD Card (amazon price = 30) just like a free items

For those Canon users/experts, I'd like to ask for your opinion on IS lenses.

I have the 400D and I'm looking at the IS lenses that Canon has. And right now, I'm in a stump. A friend of mine recommended the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, it's good for all around use daw. But another friend recommeded the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for better money's worth. Which do you guys think is better?

@petey: both the 17-85is and the 28-135is are good lenses. for me personaly i would go for the 17-85is as this will give you a good all around focal length that you want. the 28mm is just not wide enough for the 400d that you have (i also have a tamron 28-75f2.8 on a 400d and 20d). i had a 17-85is before that i sold just because i upgraded to the 24-105is... but it sure was a keeper had i not been able to save money for my upgrade. i can tell you straight that my 17-85is had a better image quality than my friends 28-135is. maybe its because the 17-85is is newer and has a new IS mechanism than the 28-135is and better lenses i suppose. but both of them will give you very good results.

petey: I hope you don't fall into the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) trap. A lot of new photographers fall into this thinking that a better lens = better photos. try to figure out what you want to take pictures of then focus your GAS towards that.

Don't worry, I won't. I have the 50mm lens but I miss the zoom and wide shots and I find that the stock lens is not really that good. Hehe. Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it.
