If you go with travel agencies, they will tout Wing Sing, Bridal Tea House and Dorsett Hotels as the cheapest hotels with an average price range of 400 HKD to 600 HKD/night.

For 50 HKD to 100 HKD less, you might find better value in cleaner and less crowded guesthouses such as:

    Golden Crown Guesthouse at TST
price range: 280-300 HKD (single), 350-400 HKD (double, private bathroom), 500 HKD (triple, private bathroom), 600 (quad, private bathroom)
To book your room, reservation is 100 HKD via paypal; balance upon arrival. (Just send me a PM if you need a link to the reservation site as I'm not allowed to post any links here).
    email: elvis@goldencrownhk.com

    Yiufai Gueshouse at TST
price range: 250-300 HKD (single or double, shared bathroom), 350 HKD (double, private bathroom)
    e-mail: reservation@yiufaiguesthouse.com

Taisan also has 3 branches, 2 of them are within the same area as Golden Crown and Yiufai. Taisan's new branch looked really nice.... but I cannot recommend their reservation system kay di kaayo organized. Mas okay mi sa Golden Crown.

As to booking your room ahead, ayaw lang agi ug regular travel agency, sir. For damage control purposes, some of these agencies will let you sign a document saying that once payment is made, money is no longer refundable - whether or not madayon inyong flight to HK.

Per experience, the best method is to use Asiatravel.com for standard hotels. Your credit card will only be charged for the first night and then you get to pay the balance in cash or through credit card upon arrival at the hotel. Bring ra nimo ang print-out sa reservation. Discounted pod ang hotel rates sa Asiatravel.com... so it's only a matter of timing.

For guesthouses, just contact the owners directly. The best system by far is the one by Golden Crown Guesthouse. Organized kaayo sila. Paid 100 HKD via PayPal ra to reserve the room, and then we settled the balance upon arrival. No hitches.

    Hope this helps.
