popsi montoya. happy new year oi!
nganu man maguul sa future sa photography?
    chill ra oi. lol
not everyone needs to learn zone system man. while its cool to have learned exactly what zone system teaches i dont see the big deal in making it a big deal.
unless they're teaching this and are continually confusing more people in the process. if the people conducting these workshops goal is to add more confusing technicalities they definitely can choose to do so. ilaha bitaw nang dula.
its a cool thing ur concerned about that though.maka hilak man sad ta nimu.

chill man. shoot more, discuss less.

June, what is important today is creativity and framing. Exposure and focusing is the problem of film that is largely solved in the era of digital. The collective industry have invested trillions of dollars into making our cameras what it is today: easy and relatively idiot-proof.

You can even forget about SLR, point and shoots & Zone System as the camera recommended by Annie Leibovitz is the iPhone. Want to compensate for exposure? Just touch the area in the frame you want to expose for. Auto exposure yan.

Annie Leibovitz and The iPhone Camera - YouTube

Ka Ansel could never have forecasted this because he never used digital.

Sure smartphone likes the iPhone can never match the image quality of a SLR because of the lens and sensor size but it is the best camera to have as it is always on you.

    bitaw nganong maguol man?

Trial and error? why not? digital bitaw.
ug film noon medyo di gyud.

Salamt diay aning Zone system, kay I abi ko kung zero na ma perfect na ang exposure ( Spot metering) , though mo adjust sad ko +1 -1 ra noon, kay di man gyud mo sanong usahay, with the zone system, it will help a bit. but for now, ang ako gipambasa is all about framing/composition.

Bago ra sad ko ani , I watched Photography Video tutorials, not on youtube .
Pero diri ra baya ko nagsugud ug basa basa sa istorya....

Before I watch a Photography Video tutorial or read a photography book, mag check sa ko sa background sa Photographer/author, basin diay ga char char lang, di diay to photographer, ga apas lang ug hits/views.

"Do you believe that anyone can figure it out all by himself?"
Before you become a jedi, you need a master, and you can't find them all on youtube.

Photography is an art nga ang audience mga photographers sad or aspiring photographers.

anyway I dont have any ambition to become a Professional photographer atm, I just want good or maybe great pictures ^_^. kay lisud lisud ni nga art

Do not fear the future of photography, kay sa kadaghan ninyo ron, naa gyud percentage nga mo excel.

"I believe the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them."
Adams, Ansel. 1981. The Negative. The New Ansel Adams Basic Photography Series/Book 2. ed. Robert Baker. Boston: New York Graphic Society.

basically, he did anticipate man the advent of digital photography being able to transcend this.
as to how, voila mao nani karun.

Dodong Ansel died on April 22, 1984. During that time it was photography stored in Betamax and VHS tapes that was considered the electronic image.

The recording behavior of the digital sensors differ from those of analogue video tapes. This makes the Zone System (as described in the slides) somewhat obsolete.

Granted that he placed that disclaimer in the book means that we should not be Zone System purists. Rather we should advocate the easiest method of learning.

If cmontoya thinks that learning the Zone System is easier than understanding your camera's exposure meter modes then I guess that's one way to skin a cat but there is always easier ways to do such things.

I choose to use all the features of my camera and I encourage everyone to do the same. All it takes is a bit of time reading the manual, trial and error and practice.

@dolina: You beat me to the punch. I was supposed to say that too - that in the end, a photographer's clients or even the snapshooter's friends and family wouldn't really ask, "Did you use the Zone System to properly expose for our skin tones?". What's important is the end results.

Again, I use the Zone System and spot metering but I don't remember an instance where I told inexperienced photographers to do the same. When they ask me for advice and they're using a point and shoot with no manual mode, I ask them to use EV compensation and I don't even mention the Zone System. Mu-ingon ra ko, kung ngitngitan ka bai, add lang EV and teach them how. I just remind them to preview all the time kay basin pirmi na lang naka +EV sila and their exposures are over all the time and they need to put it back to 0. Kay mao pud ako gi buhat sa akong PnS sa una.

And when I started out in 2008, I also read the manual completely, had a photowalk with maka and some new friends, took shoots using AV mode and evaluative metering. Nag trial and error pud ko but like you said, there are may ways to skin a cat and trial and error in terms of learning the 'technicalities' of photography just didn't seem right for me so I Googled for "proper exposure" and that led me to the Zone System. If other people don't use it, it's fine by me.

I just disagreed with how the YouTube vid taught manual exposure but I see that others don't, so I'm not going to change their mind.

I guess just like comic book drawing, there are many styles of learning too. Naa uban mugamit geometric shapes, while naa uban mugamit scribbles/rough sketches, etc. but in the end, dili man mangutana siguro readers, gi unsa pag drawing basta nindot (unless they want to become comic book artist themselves).

Exag ra dyud ako title, he he. Sorry about that folks. Problema run is murag dili ra ba pwede change ang title sa first post. Dapat guro ako title, "I disagree with this guy's method of ..." something.
