Thread: Stars

    Default Stars

This evening my curiosity strikes and as i was admiring the nice dusk sky and since i don't have my camera on hand, i began to think what are those bright, outstanding stars located at the exact east and west and both of them are parallel. They're brighter than the rest of the surrounding stars, and to start, what are those stars? This thread might be helpful for me since i have now a practical astronomy subject.

They are not stars, they're both planets. The one towards the west is Venus. The one at the east is Jupiter.

Sir Rod, which one can be seen at 3-4AM roughly 3-4 years ago? Was that Jupiter or Venus? I usually see one on my way to Lapu-Lapu around those times. Can Mars also still be seen today? I notices one star man gud nga mag change ug color, sometimes mo red ang color though not as bright as both planets.

"3-4 years" is a huge range, it could be any of the usual bright objects. But after checking with Stellarium, it's most probably Venus. Extra bright in the early morning of late 2007 (diri sa Pilipinas) due to the fact that it just overtook the earth and was still a crescent for several weeks (a crescent-shaped Venus is actually brighter than the "whole" Venus due to increased area of brightness subtended in the sky, which is caused by its close proximity to the earth).
