You should use a static IP if you run a server, otherwise, no need.
I'm running a server, and I don't have static IpJust so you know....

To get a free dynamic domain go to http://www.dyndns.org, they have instructions there
My setup is like this.... DynDns Domain --> Router/Modem -----Port Forwarding ----> My Pc(local static ip)
In turn My Pc regularly updates the dyndns server of its current IP...
local static ip means : Im assigning a static ip to my pc, and not let the router dynamically allocate me one..
this ip is non-routable over the net of course.... This is needed for portforwarding
That's my old setupNow what I'm doing is using linksys port triggering feature....
DynDns Domain --> DSL Modem-----> Linksys Router -----Port Triggering ----> My Pc(dynamic ip)
Pls don't get confused, the static ip im talking about here, is different from what the other posters are pointing at.![]()
This one is just local, meaning its not given to me by my ISP, rather this is a local one, something like 192.168.1.6. Which is non routable over the net, meaning, only PC's that can use this ip to connect to me is on my LAN. Thats why i got dyndns domain to be able to access my pc from anywhere.
ey.. thanks pal.. will try this...
