Rockboxed my iPod last night and finally I was able to transfer 4 albums of 24bit flac's for testing but I noticed that the lossless music sounded better on my laptop using iTunes 10 & Korg's Audiogate DSD player. Mid's are missing on EATB's Heaven up there album which has a very good thump when I listened on the laptop. Highs for 10k maniacs "In My Tribe" was very bright and unbearable on some tracks. Good imaging is not expected on in ear earphones but it's gotten worse..Just to show iPod video has a shitty chip inside and that's why most of you here added the USB dac's. Are those available locally? what's the price range?
The test albums, although not an audiophile recordings but at least I am very familiar with the music
Spoiler!

@buloker:
Did a quick search and you are right the iPod video uses a wolfson DAC and the new generation like the ipod classic uses cirrus. I was using shure se 125 ear phone for the test and installed the ear buds that will allow you push them deeper to the ear canal. The SE 125 is known for lacking highs and the 10k maniacs flacs were really bright while the EATB was missing mids. I don't know i'm not an expert and still learning this stuff but maybe rockbox tends to over reproduce on the higher frequency because my mac book pro + itunes combination sounded better and more balanced at least to my untrained ears
btw, these flacs are 24 bit 96 khz vinyl rips which have a more accurate highs and punchier mids than a CD rip IMO.
