and now back to jack's idol...

    Department of silly gestures

THERE is a hilarious sketch from the Monty Python comedy troupe that depicts a bowler hatted civil servant in a fictitious British government ministry that develops silly walks through grants.

In the sketch, the civil servant explains to an applicant that the walk that he’s developing isn’t silly enough to obtain a grant from the government, which is supposed to give equally to defense, social security, health, housing, education and silly walks, but recently spent less on silly walks than on national defense.

The notion that the government would establish a ministry dedicated to developing silly walks might be seen as social commentary on the bureaucratic world, but the ludicrous walks that really make up the sketch are pure comic nonsense.

For some reason, this sketch springs to mind whenever President Benigno Aquino III tries for the grand gesture only to come up with the equivalent of a silly walk.

For example, on the third day of his four-day official visit to Japan, he made a show of sending his Energy secretary back home one day early, presumably to deal with the widespread power outages caused by Typhoon Pedring.

The empty gesture was certainly silly. We doubt that the Energy secretary’s presence one day earlier would make a whit of a difference to the widespread damage that the typhoon had caused, or make emergency repairs go any faster.

We would have understood if Mr. Aquino himself flew home a day early to visit disaster-struck areas and to distribute emergency aid. That would have been seen as a gesture of empathy and leadership. But minus his actual presence at home, Mr. Aquino’s press release that he was “hands-on” in monitoring the storm situation sounded almost defensive.

Earlier during his visit, Mr. Aquino gifted the tsunami-ravaged Japanese city of Ishinomaki with a pledge of $1 million from the Filipino people. The gesture was again both silly and out of place. Nobody begrudges Mr. Aquino’s show of sympathy for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in March, but for a country with so little to donate hard currency doing so to a nation that is still much better off than we are is akin to a poor family borrowing money so that it can throw a proper feast for its fellow villagers.

The mother of all silly gestures, of course, is the Aquino administration’s insistence on giving away billions of pesos of taxpayer money to poor folk. Recipients of the cash handouts do not have to work to get this money; in fact, they must not earn very much to qualify for the so-called conditional cash transfers. This year, Mr. Aquino has given away P21 billion of our money to these “poorest of the poor” under this program. Next year, he wants to give away P39 billion more, and his stooges in Congress are all too happy to march in step.

The image of Mr. Aquino goosestepping and sidestepping his way to the Department of Silly Gestures would be hilarious—if only he weren’t giving our money away.

HL is more than meets the eye, the issue is much much more complicated than what you guys in cebu think.. Why don't you look at your neighbor the haciendas of the Arroyos in Negros? I've been to both places, and heaven knows the stark contrast as far as living conditions are concerned.. Makaluluoy kaayo ang mga sacada's sa negros kung ikumpara nimo sa mga workers sa HL in terms of benefits and compensation..

Allow me to repost my friend's comment on PALEA's strike:

"Divesting business units is a management prerogative.

Believe me, I'm about the last person in the country to give PAL props for the way they run their business, but the outsourcing plan is completely beyond the purview of labor relations.

And as bad as PAL's management is, the leadership of PALEA is even more stupid, and has almost willfully made every possible tactical mistake in dealing with this issue for more than a year.

PALEA has never argued that the separation packages were unfair -- an argument the public might understand and be sympathetic to -- but instead that PAL should not be allowed to go through with the spin-off, which defies basic logic.

And they wait until the 11th hour, 3 days before the outsourcing plan goes into motion, at the height of a typhoon, to stage an action that tries to earn support for their illogical position by pissing off the flying public. So how'd that work out for you, Mr. or Ms. "We have a right to job security?" Maybe not so well, I'd guess."
