of course he thinks $1M is chump change. it's only 1/25 or 4% of the $ 25 million pork barrel funds he received and spent from 1998-2010 as senator and congressman.

it would have been smarter to let citizens donate directly and let them write off the donation as a tax deduction, that way at least we know the people had a say on the matter...

I don't think its a big deal. Even Japan knows its just token money which they will end up giving back to us anyway in the form of ODA... it makes for nice news headlines though for better or worse.

It's the gesture that will go a long way... the amount is a paltry sum for Japan but as I said... they will appreciate this especially since it comes from a poor country and knowing the culture sa Japan... this gesture will foster more economic cooperation between our two countries...

Japan is getting left behind by China by sheer volume and South Korea is catching up to them in terms of quality... they need to compete sa manufacturing... hopefully they will find the Philippines as an attractive partner for their production.

the 1 Million USD is what you call "Good Will"

I think you're probably right, but the Philippines is already one of the top investment destinations for the Japanese in ASEAN. It's the other investing countries that we are having a hard time attracting.

Two major sources of investment that need to be looked at in the near future are South Korea and China. South Korea as you said, is already on par with Japan technologically. China is self-explanatory, they are huge investors even as far away as Africa and like to invest in mining and agriculture. Philippines has potential to be a major player in agribusiness but our CARP laws make large-scale farming close to impossible for foreigners. China is also going to be a huge challenge because of Spratlys, the government will need to figure out if winning investment from China is worth the trouble. The amount pledged by China during Noynoy's visit is a joke, it's never going to happen their local newspapers didn't even bother mentioning it. They will use investments as leverage in the Spratlys dispute. If Noynoy is smart he should already know this...

^ Arroyo didn't blame Cory for our low economic freedom rankings... low economic freedom comes from our pro-oligarchy anti-competition constitution adopted during Cory's time. If he is really sincere in finding blame for our lack of economic freedom he should look at his mum.. well now we have freedom to vote but no economic freedom I guess we should be proud of that or what? I bet lee kuan yew is laughing all the way from Singapore because we've confirmed his theory that democracy without money or food to eat is a big fail for Asian countries. this is a sad way to run a government.
