Bonfire - System That Projects Touchscreen Interface on the Surface Next to Your Laptop

Watch the video: ‪UIST'09: Bonfire: a nomadic system for hybrid laptop-tabletop interaction‬‏ - YouTube

Bonfire is a special system developed for tabletop-laptop interaction. The technology involves the use of cameras, lasers and mirrors in order to transform the spaces on the left and right of a laptop into interfaces that a user can operate.

Bonfire uses lasers to project interface onto the surface near the laptop. Using the projected interface the user is free to interact with pictures, videos and other content.

In addition, the interface can be used to transfer different content from a handheld device to the laptop.

It would be worth mentioning that this is more than just a touchscreen interface, the system serves as an addition to laptop's keyboard and mouse.

Vinyl Workout - Fun Digital Record Player Projected on Your Floor

The author of this invention is Theo Watson. He decided to create this giant recorder for the inaugural Rotterdam Electronic Music Festival.

Dubbed the "Vinyl Workout," the device is able to turn a floor into a digital record player. It projects a huge record player onto the floor. The user has the possibility to control the player by running around on top of the projection.

The interactive system detects the movements of a person on the projection and acts accordingly - when the user walks slowly, the player slows the music down and when the user moves in the opposite direction, the player begins playing the song backwards.

Besides, the Vinyl Workout can serve as a fitness device - the it plays music as long as you walk.

Amazing Solar-powered LED Media Wall of the Taipei Pop Music Center

This incredible design, created for the Taipei Pop Music Center, was developed by Nabito Architects. The design features a photovoltaic facade along with a wall covered with LED panels.

The most impressive feature of the construction is the ability of the LED wall to show advertisements, news, as well as trailers for the events that are to come, based on the activities that will take place at the Center the respective day. Another interesting fact is that the LED panels are powered entirely by the sun.

Currently the design is just a proposal that was submitted for the Taipei Pop Music Center Competition. In addition to showing various talented pop artists, the Center will also showcase an innovative use of green energy.

The current building resembles the Zero Energy Media Wall built in Beijing, but it's bigger. It would be controlled with the help of a central computer. The projection will change based on the events that take place during the night as well as the crowd outside, informs DesignBoom.

It is worth mentioning that the construction is based on a horizontal plate that has been twisted at the center, making two slabs: one vertical and one horizontal. Digital media art is projected on the wall's northern vertical slab, while the south side of the horizontal plate features photovoltaic cells incorporated into glass panels. Such a design makes it possible for the LED media wall of the Taipei Pop Music Center to be a net-zero endeavor.

Hologram Projector to Help You Feel a Hologram

    Video: ‪Touchable Holography‬‏ - YouTube

The latest invention developed by scientists from the University of Tokyo is a hologram projector that allows a person to touch a hologram with bare hands. Usually it is impossible to do so due to the fact that holograms are made only of light. However, improved technology allows a user to actually feel holograms floating in 3D space.

Researchers called their latest invention Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display. The hologram projector takes advantage of an ultrasound phenomenon, which scientists dubbed acoustic radiation pressure. Thus, the projector is able to generate a pressure sensation on a person's hands that are identified with the help of two Nintendo Wiimotes.

According to Japanese scientists, the technology does not require any physical contact, which means that the quality of the hologram will not be diluted. The team of researchers led by Hiroyuki Shinoda, recently presented their latest invention at SIGGRAPH 2009 in New Orleans.

On their website the team explains: "A retroreflective marker is attached on the tip of user's middle finger. IR LEDs illuminate the marker and two Wiimotes sense the 3D position of the finger. Owing to this hand-tracking system, the users can handle the floating virtual image with their hands."

If you look at the video below you can see scientists demonstrating how a person can feel virtual raindrops that fall off the user's hand. Such technology could be widely used in video games.

iPoint 3D Allows Using Fingers and Hands as a Remote Control

With the help of iPoint 3D users are free to communicate with a 3D monitor with the help of simple gestures. There is no need to either touch the monitor or use 3D glasses or a data glove.

The iPoint 3D will be presented at CeBIT in the period between March 3 and 8 by scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut. Anyone will have the ability to see the latest invention of HHI scientists in Hall 9, Stand B36.

The main feature of the iPoint 3D is its recognition device, which measures almost like a common keyboard. One can easily suspend the device from a ceiling or ingeniously integrate it in a coffee table. User's hands and fingers are identified in real time by two incorporated FireWire cameras that transmit the collected data to a computer, explains Paul Chojecki, a research scientist at the HHI.

Besides being a great device for gamers, the iPoint 3D can also prove to be rather practical in office or an operating room in a hospital. It may also serve as a part of an interactive data system, reports the official website of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft , Europe's largest organization for applied research.

"Since the interaction is entirely contactless, the system is ideal for scenarios where contact between the user and the system is not possible or not allowed, such as in an operating room," says Chojecki.

The latest invention from HHI scientists can thus be used as an instrument of controlling other tools. For example, if a person, who kneads pastry, has their fingers coated in dough, the boiling potatoes can be turned down by a simple wave of a finger. Another example could be an architect, who can examine a set of building drawings by using different gestures to see all angles of the construction, using fingers as a remote control.

Mind-Reading Prius Bike Can Shift Gears with Just a Thought!

The Prius Projects Concept Bike has reached its final stage, and it has just been revealed that Toyota and Parlee Cycles are working with DeepLocal to bring some incredible technology to the green bicycle. Using a neuron helmet, the rider of the Prius bike can shift gears with their mind!

More pics: Mind-Reading Prius Bike Can Shift Gears with Just a Thought! Prius Project Concept Bike

DeepLocal also designed a smartphone app to monitor heart rate, speed, and cadence. This could allow the bike to be programmed to behave intelligently in the future, remembering the driver’s behavior on a certain route and switching to autopilot mode for auto shifting. The design of the bike overall is subtle, but this type of technology has all sorts of implications in terms of futuristic features.
