I wouldn't go that far. At best, Michael Bay is a mediocre director with a fetish for explosives and toiler humor, that's why his movies appeal to men. The Island was ok, but it could have been a great science fiction flick, but it got mucked up. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed adrenaline rides such as The Rock and The Bad Boys movies but Michael Bay was the wrong director for the Transformers franchise.
There's no question that the franchise has made tons of money, but it would have made money even if it was made by a chimp because it had robots who can transform into cars, planes, and tanks. The reason why a lot of people are so passionate about bashing Michael Bay and his version of the Transformers is because it's close to our hearts. Some people even consider it a major part of their childhood. I mean, how cool was it when you saw Optimus Prime transform from a trailer truck into a robot, rushing into battle while "The Touch" was playing at the background? Yes, it was that awesome. Then compare it with Bay's version and you feel compelled to at least punch the guy if you see him.
One major beef people have against these movies is Bay's insistence to include toilet humor to get cheap laughs. Remember the toilet scene with Wang? Yes, his name was Wang, get it? Doesn't it strike you why it had to be included in the movie? It made no sense. Plus, there's way too much screen time for the humans. Sometimes, I refer to these movies as "Sam and the Transformers" or "Sam's Ridiculously Annoying Parents and the Transformers".
