an article:
THE scalpel is a small and extremely sharp bladed instrument used in surgery for cutting skin, tissues, muscle and other parts of the anatomy. More than a decade ago, a new and far superior kind of scalpel has been invented by Dr. Wilmo Orejola, a Filipino doctor and cardiothoracic surgeon in New Jersey. Called the harmonic scalpel, it uses ultrasonic technology to simultaneously cut and coagulate tissue at the precise point of application. Because the harmonic scalpel uses ultrasound, it doesn’t burn flesh and there is less smoke, unlike lasers and electro-surgical instruments.
