Tallo leaves Ateneo: Right or Wrong Move?

you can never fit to any system or any school if you have the bad attitude. You may have the talent but if you dont have the attitude, youll end up just like allen iverson who is nowhere to be found. Usahay angay ta magpaubos ug kabaw ta mu balanse sa situation.

Good for him kung ni decide na siya aron dili sayang ang 1 year. From what I read, kung nakasugod siya sa admu ug mubalhin siya to another rival school, 2 years diay ang residency requirement. If you are coming from cebu to manila like slaughter, 1 year ra ang residency. I am not sure if uaap to ncaa and vice versa kung 1 or 2 years ang residency.

I also read that Slaughter is rumored to be staying only for 1 year and going for the PBA next year.

Disclaimer: I'm not the Tallos' lawyer or anything, I don't speak for them. Like you sir, I'm just sharing how I see things from my perspective.

The way I see it, the elder Tallo decided to air his side on the local daily because he wanted to clear the air about what really happened from their side of things and not because he wanted to bitch about the whole situation or make the Ateneo brass look like the villains. Coach Norman fired the first shot in the media, so I guess he was just defending his son. To wit:

"I am somewhat disappointed with the information Coach Black has relayed to the press in Manila and in Cebu with regards to how my son left ADMU to return to Cebu. He distorted so many facts that my son came out as the bad guy in the whole situation."

I'm sure the dad also wants this mess behind them so that Mark Jayven can go on with his basketball career so I'd like to think that, because he has now given his side of the story to the public, both Ateneo and the Tallos are now burning up the phone lines in trying to resolve the matter amicably and in private. He said so himself in the letter (that before they choose which school to transfer to they have to fix things with Ateneo first). We won't be privy to all the details, but it might be better that way because it's really their business and like you are implying, things would be a lot smoother if they don't air out what has transpired between them to the public so that no one will come out looking like "not very nice people".

And again, I don't want to think of it as "milking" because as a member of the team Mark Jayven was entitled to join the trip to Las Vegas (but the story about the dad asking to tag along admittedly sounds a little fishy). Perhaps the Tallo frustration dam just broke too late. I don't know for sure, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt.

So do I re: benefit of the doubt, but then again maybe you can ask Mr. Tallo where Norman Black "fired first". The departure was a hot topic of discussion by several forums and bloggers. Maybe these were what Mr. Tallo thought were statements by Norman Black? I do not recall ever reading anything from any official Ateneo members (Norman Black, Paolo Trillo, Ateneo Admin, etc) except they mentioned that Tallo left for Cebu.

Maybe you can ask the dad if he did ask if he could join the trip. My source is pretty solid on that one.

Re: moving on. Mr Tallo claims Ateneo keeps calling them so all they have to do is pick up the phone. Either they don't want to or Ateneo isn't calling, which ever way it doesn't seem consistent. You want to communicate but don't answer or they aren't calling, so which one is it?

Maybe you would consider that there are some distorted facts as well in the letter of Mr. Tallo?

what is it with the giving of pants thing? is that some sort of show of camaraderie or was mark tallo in financial difficulty that he needed someone to give him pants instead of buying his own?

I don't know Mark Tallo (the dad) personally so I have no idea how he is as a person or what kind of temperament he has. But I don't want to believe that he is on a smear campaign against Norman Black, Paolo Trillo, or any of the Ateneo bigwigs. I get that your main beef really is that he chose to cry to the public instead of talking things over in private, in the process painting a picture where Coach Norman and buddies are bad guys. But if he says he heard things being said by those people against his son whether through the internet or some other formal/informal source and that is why he chose to fire back/defend him, until there is proof to the contrary I will be inclined to believe that he was only looking out for the welfare of the kid. If you think about it, even we outsiders have gotten wind of the story even before the letter was published in Sun.Star, so I believe there really was a statement made. It was going to be made public eventually, so I guess Mr. Tallo just beat everyone to the punch. I want to believe that that's really all that it is, a dad protecting his son's interests. And in the letter, there was really nothing there that would suggest that Coach Norman is an asshole. I guess any dad would over-react if his son would call him saying he wanted to come back home because a coach berated him (that is, presuming the press release account of what happened after the Mapua game is accurate).

And about the calls and w/n they are in fact being made by Ateneo, I don't have a clue about that. Perhaps you are more in the loop about it, but I'd like to think that both parties are working it out already without involving the press or letting it be known through the internet. Because like Mr. Tallo said, they want to settle the matter with Ateneo first before deciding which school they are transferring Mark Jayven to. Given that there's not a lot of time anymore (presuming that he still wants Mark Jayven to play for a school this season), I'm sure he wants this thing over with ASAP so Mark Jayven can already transfer. Whether the letter contained distorted facts or not is beyond me, but since Mr. Tallo isn't really known to be a notorious liar I'll take his word for it. Innocent until proven guilty, in legal parlance.

I'm not saying I'm right or that you're wrong, it's just the way I see it. I'm not saying Mr. Tallo is a saint and perhaps I'm just ignorant of the real facts but given all that has been fed to the public, that's how I'd assess the situation.

I don't know if it was financial difficulty, but Tallo did not have enough pants so his teammates got together and gave him some,Nico Salva happened to be the closest size. Camraderie I guess.

There is a mention about rookies not normally getting big minutes.

If then there were remarks and distorted facts then we must presume they were told to Mr. Tallo directly and only to him?

If he did hear them from secondary sources then any gentleman would approach the Coach or Team Manager. I remember talking to a Cebuano about 6-7 months ago about Mac-Mac's joining the Blue Eagles, the guy then went on a rant about Mark Tallo was his coach in HS and that he was the most abusive HS coach he ever had. The guy would shout invictives at these 14-15 year olds for the smallest mistake. Of course I never believed it then because I never saw/heard it for myself.

Again I know for a fact he never approached Norman Black, Paollo Trillo, or Jack Huang. I doubt any person who is truly interested in working things out would not even try.

I doubt Mr. Tallo is on a smear campaign as well. People in the basketball community know how people whose names he has maligned do things, so their reputations are intact.

Ask Mr. Tallo who has taken care of MacMac's carrer the past 3 years, who would spend to send Macmac to the NBA Jrs or other training camps. The person has the resources in media to wage a war against the Tallo's if he so wishes. He has chosen the higher route and will not respond in an unfriendly manner. He just wishes they would have reached out to him before going AWOL.

IMHO it is more than Mr. Tallo does not want the recruitment value of his son to go down, so he is choosing to make it seem that they are "victims" than deserters.

Of course these are just my observations from what I read and what I know, you have your own observations and opinions as well..
