Thread: 1TB HDD Dilemma

    Default 1TB HDD Dilemma

It's already been a few years now that 1TB HDD's are becoming cheaper right now with price gap almost between Php 2.5k - 3k.

Now I'm still stuck with my Seagate 320GB 7200.10 which I bought last 2007 and it's still running without any problems so far as expected from Seagate's hard drives.

I was actually about to buy Seagate 1TB a few years ago but the 7200.11 that plagued with firmware problems hesitated me the buy that series. So I looked up other options with WD, Samsung and eventually the Hitachi Deskstar.

But things are changing again this year and so far this are my options that still left me undecided on choosing the right 1TB.
    I'm choosing based

I'm really having hard time choosing another HD's again because I do have different preferences with comes to HDD. Performance, reliability, price and after sales service. Here are my choices so far

    1TB SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ
Priced at Php 2,600 - TPC: Annot
    Pros

    Cons
    • Crappy RMA service according again to TPC people. You even have to pay its customs and freight charges.
    • Seagate just recently bought Samsung HD license. Another Maxtor in the making.

    1TB Seagate 7200.12 ST31000524AS
Priced at Php 2,850 - PCHub
    Pros
    • Balanced performance as expected from Seagate, nothing unusual so far.[/li]
    • Excellent and fast after sales services especially with RMA request. Free shipment and data recovery to Seagate Singapore according to TPC.

    Cons
    • None so far but performance wise its not really winner compare to Spinpoint F3.
    • They used to have 5 year warranty on Barracuda series but now, they reduced it to 3 years.
    • I have been always biased so far with Seagate.. LOL

    1TB WDC Caviar Green WD10EARS
Priced at Php 2,620 - PCHub
    Pros
    • 64 MB Cache
    • 4KB sector size
    • Works very well with Windows 7 as it supports 4KB sector.

    Cons
    • 5400 RPM only
    • As expected from Green branding - Cool and low power = Slow.
    • Quite unfamiliar with their RMA procedure.

    1TB Hitachi Deskstar HDS721010CLA332
Priced at Php 2,395 - PCHub
    Pros
    • Price winner

    Cons

I'd like Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black Series which currently priced at 3.9k but my budget is limited only to 2.5k - 3k including the shipping fees.

nothing wrong with the "green" suffix. you're not thinking of using a 1tb (or more) drive as a primary drive, do you? these capacities are more suitable as secondary drives where you can store all your music and videos. i wouldn't want to install my games in a 1tb+ drive. i have a wd20ears drive and there's nothing wrong with it, actually.

i would get which is available and cheap. same ra japon warranty-based ra japon on the shop you purchased it, unless u will RMA it urself to get the extended warranties. performance will not really be a big of an issue here although F3 looks good on paper dont knw how much it will really matter in actual use. if performance is really an issue then go SSD, else for storage even the "green" drives are good.

I wouldnt want my video/music/porn to be stored on a 5,400RPM drive that takes 2.5x more loading time.

grabeh ka accurate sa imo data gud.. 2.5x more loading times jud? even on boot-time a "green"/5400rpm drive is just a few seconds slower than 7200rpm. there may be times its slow.. but 2.5x slower? i need to see your sources on these...
