Been with the BPO industry for long now but as what I have noticed, dli jud tanan sa floor maau mo english. Politics inside the company is one reason cguro. All of us can speak the language but only a few can talk. I was once like you but I worked really hard and follow through with persistence. Never give up! Confidence is the key and you cannot have it in a snap. It takes time jud na be patient lang and focus. If lisud jud ang call center, why not sa ESL? there, ma practice jud ka maau. mas easier man sudlon compare sa call center.
Never give up because I used think na being a call center agent is dili jud cguro pra akoa but through hard work and persistence, This is not to brag but after I've worked in an ESL institution, wala nku na fail and I'm not afraid ug pila pa na ka interviews ihatag nila and just doesn't care who ang mo interview nku. I take full control of the conversation jud na and ask questions also about the company that I'm applying for.
hi all
i'm a fil -am been here for about 1 year and 1 month now. i was born in cebu but moved to new york city when i was about 2 years old. it's my first time here in the philippines. bisaya was never spoken in the house.
i learned/learning bisaya for the past year from friends, tutors, teachers etc.
i'm from new york which is the melting pot of the world. thousands of cultures and quite honestly i have to give filipinos here a lot of credit. they are obviously the best at learning english without an accent compared to other cultures. a perfect example would be all the outsourcing done through call centers.
i think personally the best recommendations that possibly anyone can give is "practice"
i learned bisaya by practicing, communicating with others on a frequent basis, reading books, as well as reading an english to bisaya dictionary EVERYDAY since i've been here. I started by learning 5-10 words a day.
i'm utterly horrible at speaking it. but i get by. i've been here for just over a year and i can understand the language completely.
the best recommendations i can give :
- reading any type of literature out loud
- watching tv , movies, shows, as well as the news [ news reporters speak quite frankly the best ]
- reading the dictionary as well as a thesaurus HELPS TREMENDOUSLY
- don't get discouraged
- i have numerous filipino friends here who speak english and others would laugh at them due to grammatical mistakes etc [ don't let it bother you ]
- the english language is structured differently and i believe that's one of the main reasons there are mistakes in grammar
- also some pronunciations are different. the people of the philippines are taught the european-english way of pronunciating which i find quite odd
IE: GRAHAM
european - GRAY HAM
american - gram
all in all. practice makes perfect.

My advice. Don't worry about accents. Most native English speaking people (at least in the US) are pretty patient about other peoples accents and will ask you to repeat yourself if they don't understand you. English spoken with even the thickest Filipino accent is still understandable. I consider Manny Pacquiao to have a really thick accent when he speaks English but my white friends have said they understand what he is saying. And in the end that's whats important - to be understood.
Don't worry too much about grammar. It's important to know the basics but if you want to speak English fluently then you need to think like a native speaker. Try saying whats on your mind out loud and don't over analyze it. If it sounds wrong then you can make the necessary corrections then.
I remember my English professor in college and she told us that Filipinos are good writers and speakers of the English language except that we are weak in using prepositions.
