MANILA, Philippines — President Aquino was given a “special tour” of the US super carrier USS Carl Vinson Saturday, the carrier that carried then buried the remains of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the North Arabian Sea following a successful operation in Pakistan.

In his twitter account Saturday afternoon, Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning (PCDSP) Secretary Ricky Carandang disclosed that the President had lunch at the US Navy carrier before the tour “a day before it was scheduled to make a port call.”

Aquino was accompanied by US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr., Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, Secretary of National Defense Voltaire Gazmin, Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima, Secretary of Presidential Communications Ricky Carandang, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eduardo Oban, Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Chief Julia Abad, US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Leslie Bassett, and PAGCOR Chairman Cristino Naguiat Jr.

The schedule was not announced to the Malacanang press corps.

“We are so honored that President Aquino was able to visit the carrier today. The crew was just thrilled to be able to meet him and the other distinguished visitors who joined us,” Thomas said.

During the tour, Aquino also met Filipino-American sailors aboard the ship.

The nuclear-powered super carrier, escorted by the USS Bunker Hill (CG-52), a guided-missile cruiser; USS Shiloh (CG-670), also a guide-missile cruiser; and USS Gridley (DDG-101), a guide-missile destroyer, will be in Manila until Thursday, May 19.

Armed Forces spokesman Commodore Miguel Jose S. Rodriguez said that “the Carl Vinson visit is just a port call which the US Navy does to her allies.” He added that even the Philippine Navy also makes port visits to her allies in the Asian region.
