A FAMILY’S breadwinner was killed yesterday morning, reportedly over a piece of bread.
Construction worker Glenn Abellare, 44, died after he was struck in the head with a 16-millimeter steel bar, allegedly by his co-worker Arnel Montes, 25.
Police learned that before the attack, Montes accused Abellare of taking a piece of pandesal from his mother, who sold snacks to workers in the construction site in Sunrise Village, Barangay Poblacion Pardo, Cebu City.
The attack occurred at 8:20 a.m.
“
Nagbilin man siya’g istorya nga, ‘Diretso lang mo’g kuha og pan dinha, morag wala’y tag-iya’ (Some people heard him complaining about those who took his mother’s bread as if they owned it),” PO3 Bobby Escarlan of the Pardo Police Station said.
Police said that Montes fled in the direction of a transport terminal near the site. Montes was from Pinamungajan, while Abellare lived in Sitio Bogo, Quiot, Pardo.
After the attack, a crowd formed near the construction site where Abellare was found slumped over a low wooden bench, his head resting on a tangle of steel wire.
The police are still verifying a report that Montes’ mother, who was at the construction site at the time of the fight, suffered a heart attack and was brought to a hospital.
SPO4 Rey Cuyos of the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said that the victim received heavy blows on his head and back.
The steel bar that was believed to have been used in the attack was retrieved from the makeshift shanty where the construction workers often bought their snacks.
A son’s burden
Abellare’s wife, Elvie, 44, remembered her husband as a good provider for their family of five. Teary-eyed, she expressed hope that justice will be served.
“
Maayo unta nga mo-surrender, maayo unta nga matagaan og hustisya iyang kamatayon (I hope that the suspect will surrender and that justice will be dealt),” she told
Sun.Star Cebu.
Jason, the victim’s 17-year-old son, said he is willing to shoulder the heavy burden his father’s death will place on their family.
“
Mangita’g maayo nga trabaho para ikatabang (I will find a good job so that I can help my family),” he said.
Barangay Captain Altea Lim said that officials are trying their best to provide assistance to Abellare’s family, although he was not on their master list of Pardo residents.
Abellare had worked on the commercial building site for a month.
