Just when someone tries to bridge the gap, the Vatican screws it up again. So much for "tolerance, love, and brotherhood."

Yes and Yes. The Pope statement is a denial of the basic teaching of the apostles about salvation. He is denying one of the foundation of the Christian faith. He is denying the work of Christ on the cross. You see, if people can go to heaven by just doing good without having faith in Jesus then what's the purpose for Christ's sacrifice?
