I got this cute little book "Ever wonder why?". I would like to share a randomly selected item regularly in this thread. Please bear with me, I am a slow typist, I just a farmboy hehehe

First selection:

- doughnuts have holes?

the doughnut was invented in 1847 by a New england sea captain named Hanson Gregory. some say that Capt Gregory put holes in his doughnuts to permit a more thorough cooking of the dough, thereby making the doughut more digestible. others say that he put hole there so that he could hook a few of the dougnuts on the handles of his ship's steering wheel to have them close at hand while piloting the ship.

the "corned" in corned beef has nothing to do with the vegetable corn. it means "preserved in salt". the salt pellets originally used to preserve this type of beef were called salt "corns" and beef preserved in this way was called corned beef.
