Your GATEWAY IP is most likely your ROUTER IP.
Ping your Gateway IP.

Linksys router: 192.168.1.1 (most Linksys routers)
Siemens (modem/router but depends on the model): 192.168.2.1 (base on Bell Sympatico Canadian ISP but not sure with this model)

Question:

* If computer connected directly to the modem what is the IP address?
If the IP address starts like this 192.168.*.* most likely the configuration if connected to a router would be a Dynamic DHCP.

* If computer connected directly to the modem, can you check if you have a dialer on your web browser? How to check? You can go to Tools then select Internet Options then click on the Connection tab, in the box you can see a dialer if you have and underneath the box you can see dial whenever etc.

If you have a dialer on your web browser the configuration on your router it should be PPPoE like typing the username and password given by your ISP.
