How to motivate a child (3 to 10yrs old) for a particular course on college?

I've read a Psychology book before that it is possible to motivate one's child to what
parents wants them to take up in college.

Let's say, if you want your child to be an engineer.
- you have to provide him/her toys or things related to Engineering jobs

Or, if you want your child to be a doctor:
- you have to provide him/her toys or things related to Doctor or Medicine jobs

So as the rest.

Don't know yet if this was proven. Even so, does any parents here have some relevant
experiences on this topic?

Why not just EXPOSE the kid to all kinds of stuff like the arts and the sciences... then let him decide?

As parents we are here not to manipulate but to GUIDE. If my son wants to be a musician.... I will send him to the best music school I can afford.

i agree with d'monyita. i think it is best to let your child decide what he would like to be when he grows up. this way, it will help your child become goal oriented. having known what he wants would encourage him to develop his skills in planning and decision making.

for me, parents should be there to guide and mentor their children and not to dictate.

you cant control your kidz man on what course to take up pagka college niya.. lets say, imu cya ma convince nga mag nursing cya.. perhaps mo sunod cya but.. if d cya happy anah nga course sayang2x lang ang parents sa gasto kay basin kalit lang na ug shift or dili mag tarong kay napugos lang... hehehe

I think it's more on how you expose and influence your child.

I guess at the end, it all falls to his/her (our child) decision.

im not a parent yet but i plan to be one. what i think is that we all have experiences some time in our childhood which influence our decisions later on in life. either consciously or subconsciously. as to creating a path for a child to be more inclined in choosing a course you want him to take up when he grows up, it may be possible. but i don't think its healthy.

Along the way, I think friends and environment also contributes/influences what the child wants when he/she grows up. :mrgreen:

If his/her group of friends during high school years would like to become an IT professional, he/she might as well become one just to be with them.

Or, if he/she grows up on a family environment with his uncles, aunts, and parents are mostly on a medical profession, he/she might as well would like to take up the same course.
