    Default PROBLEM FORMATTING A DISK

before, i can easily reformat the HD's i have in a fly, but recently, i've been having trouble formatting it and installing the OS. after formatting and encoding the VOLUME Label, say, 250GIG, what would appear when i DIR it is a different numbers and letters. also, even if i have formatted it using DOS, the XP installation would prompt me to format the HD again when before it would simply prompt whether i wanted to re-format it or leave it at that. so, i went on to format (again) the HD but after it's done, it would not proceed to install the OS. tried everything from swapping the IDE slot and IDE cables... but nothing happened. btw, i bought a new hard disk and its still the same result.

if you have experience similar problem before and was able to solve it, lemme know how you did it. also, any tips you can give are very much appreciated.

i'll try brad... it should work cos as i've said earlier, i bought a brand new HD yesterday and tried formatting it and it yielded the same result as with my old HD so this is not a simple HD problem. i suspect it's the MoBo, cables, or DIMM

if HDD is ruled out then you can start replacing cables...

try putting your hard disk in an enclosure -- pls use an enclosure then use a software called partition table doctor v.3 then have it fixed your MBR {master boot record} then after it fixes u can do a clean format,
