RIP Maria Jocelyn Mendoza.
OFW’s spouse killed in heist
A WOMAN was stabbed dead inside her house in what authorities believe was a robbery witnessed in part by her eight-year-old daughter in Barangay Cabancalan, Mandaue City yesterday morning.
The girl did not see the actual attack on her mother, but saw the culprit climb to the second floor and ransack her parents’ room.
Maria Jocelyn Mendo-za, 40, was killed on the ground floor of the house around 6 a.m., when her neighbors were still asleep.
Her husband is working in New Zealand.
The police said the robber, after looting the master’s bedroom, also took the sales of the family’s sari-sari store on the ground floor.
The police have yet to determine how much was lost.
Insp. George Aniñon, Mandaue City Police Office Homicide Section chief investigator, said they suspect that Mendoza was familiar with her assailant, who must have knocked on the door.
The attacker stabbed Mendoza five times in the neck, using a knife.
“So no one would hear her cries, he smothered her with a throw pillow he got from the sofa,” Aniñon said.
The police recovered a bloodstained throw pillow beside the head of Mendoza, who was sprawled two meters from the door.
Her daughter woke up because of the commotion and saw a man climb upstairs and go to the master’s bedroom.
Aniñon said the girl followed the culprit from the second floor to the ground floor; and when she saw him enter the store, she went back upstairs and woke up her sisters, ages 10 and 16.
“Nanaug silang tulo. Kay wala na man diha ang tawo, nitawag sila og tabang sa mga silingan (The three daughters then went downstairs. When they saw that the man was already gone, they asked their neighbors for help),” he said. (AIV)
