What Can You REALLY Do? On Preparedness and Surviving Catastrophies

I've been reading a lot of posts/blogs from people discussing what would happen if a quake like the one that struck Japan recently would hit a major Philippine city (i.e. Metro Manila, Metro Cebu etc.), and that research has indicated ( http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/vi...quake.cnn.html ) that major cities in the Philippines are FLAT-FOOTED-UNPREPARED for a quake like the Japan quake. Which means, over 50,000 people are expected to die if one of these cities get hit.
So...the bottom line is, what can you do?
Others will say, "Oh let's just pray hard...God will help us." While I'm all in favor of positive thinking and prayer, what will you do then in case there is indeed a catastrophe (after all, believers say it's "God's Choice/Will" if this will indeed happen or not).
No wait, I think the better mindset is, why not think/pretend that the catastrophe has in fact, already happened. Like, the people you see on the street, think that half of them will die, and that one thing you don't want is for you to be included in the list. But of course, this is also not a realistic mindset--you are still alive, but the potential for catastrophe looms in the horizon.
So again the question remains...what should you do?
Well one thing I can think of as of this point in time (useful only if you have access to the internet) is for you to watch the videos from this YouTube channel:

I've learned a lot from these videos from Dave Canterbury, and there are other channels that talk of the topic itself.
Now I know what some of you might be thinking. Sheesh, these guys are survivalists, like some of them believe that one day, zombies or aliens will be invading the earth! But think about it--even though some of them might exhibit this sort of paranoia, the things they are trying to learn is actually useful during ANY form of catastrophe, calamity, or disaster. So I advise you to watch and learn...I've been a fan of this channel for 2 years now, very useful stuff.
Remember, it doesn't have to be THIS channel--some have criticised this channel to be one that tends to commercialize survival techniques and tell people to buy their products, but again, you have to view things BEYOND that...The mind set should be...get the info you need, and get out, that's it. Period.
The knowledge you get from these videos could save your life one day, I'm willing to bet on that.
