Interview with the NBA Live 08 Next Gen producer Brian Ulrich.

1.) Will players have their individual signature movements like shots and emotions (ex: After clutch shot Kobe Pumps his fist)?

Signature Go To Moves is a pretty cool new feature that we are doing this year. There has been quite a bit of coverage in the gaming press on this the last few weeks so if you haven't heard about it yet I would suggest you check out some of those articles. The important thing to know about them is that they don't require a special button presses or controller move to make happen- they are just shots that happen under the right contextual circumstances for certain players. For example, if you get Kevin Garnett in the post and shoot a fadeaway jumper you will get KG's fadeaway and not a generic one. This is really the evolution of the signature jump shots that we did last year, but this year you get full on signature moves instead of just jump shots.

We also do a lot of signature dunks, lay-ups, and passes for certain players, but these are baked into each player's table of possible actions so they don't happen 100% of the time. You will on occasion see Steve Nash pull off a pass that no one else in the game can do, or have T-Mac throw down a signature dunk on the break.

Finally, we have added in about 15 to 20 signature celebrations this year as well as some more generic ones that can be used by a variety of players. We wanted to make sure that these don't get overused, so we tuned them so that they will only play in big game situations. We didn't want people to see these all the time and get sick of them, so it may take you a while to spot them all.

3.) Are you working on ANYTHING similar to the NCAA-Madden relationship of draft classes?

This is something that we have talked about quit a bit the last couple of years, but so far we have not implemented. One of the problems is that unlike the NCAA Football-Madden situation, March Madness ships several months after NBA LIVE. That means that we would have to make NBA LIVE 08 work with NCAA March Madness 07 rosters. By the time that NBA LIVE 08 ships, March Madness 07 has been out for 9 months already. The Madness audience is already gearing up for their 08 game by then which is one of the reasons we haven't done it yet. It is something that we talk about every year on LIVE so I'll put it to you guys. What do you think? Would you want it in NBA LIVE 08 if it meant it would only work with March Madness 07?

4.) Will the free throw shots be realistic like if duncan would go up for the free throw will he do his actual routine and shoot the free throw how he does in real life? One thing ive noticed is that shawn marion shoots freethows normal he should shoot them with his weird shot because that's how he shoots them.

We have about 45 signature free throw routines in the game, but we haven't done signature free throw shots yet. We talked about it for 08, but decided that other things were more important this year. Good idea though. By the way, one thing we did last year that I'm not sure a lot of people know about is the free throw sim button. I know not everyone likes the next gen free throw shooting system (though some people really like it), so everyone who wants more realistic results from the line can use the sim free throw button. It simply makes the player shoot his real FT percentage and takes user skill out the equation all together.

8.) Will the CPU be using all kinds of plays that are in the playbook?

Yes. This is one of the most improved areas of the game. Each CPU team has about 25 unique plays that they can run, although just like in the real NBA, teams won't run a set play on every possession. We take into account a team's general offensive tendencies and the tempo they like to play at, so an up tempo team like Phoenix will only run set plays about 15 or 20% of the time, whereas a slow down team like Indiana will run set plays about 70% of the time. There are lots of new plays for each team, and the work we've done on team offense with regards to spacing and player AI has really paid off. It's pretty cool when you see the CPU run a play for Kobe , his defender gets hung up on a low pick, and he gets an open jumper from the elbow.

10.) Do players' skills progress during the season and more after a successful season?

Player skills can progress during the season if you are using your assistant coaches to train them, but not if you don't. At the end of the season all players go through player progression (no coach training required) where we take into consideration their age, potential, work-ethic, etc. and adjust their ratings accordingly. I think what you are asking is for a player's statistics and success during a season to have an impact on the end of year player progression, correct? That's a really good idea but not something we are doing yet. We will look into if for next year.

    11.) is there a create-a-team mode?

Not exactly. We added a feature this year called “Quick Pick Play” where after choosing the teams you want to play with you can quickly choose your players for that game from every player in the league. It's basically a way that you can easily create a team of your favorite players for a Play Now game. And there is an auto fill roster feature so you don't have to select every player if you don't want to (just pick your starters, or even just a player or two). We haven't really considered doing a true create-a-team mode since NBA LIVE is an authentic NBA-licensed game.

12.)Are there any new features in the Create-a-Player mode? If so what are they?

We didn't add any features to Create Player mode this year. We do have some pretty interesting ideas for this mode in the future, so I would be happy to hear what kind of things you would like to see added. Get your lists to Marcus and he can pass them on to us.

15.) On a breakaway will your other players go to the basket and not stop at the three point line?

Fast breaks and transitions are a lot better this year. In fast break situations you will rarely ever see players spotting up behind the arc and they will always go to the basket. The only exception to this is on occasion on a 3 on 2 break, if one of the wing players is a great outside shooter and not a great finisher at the rim (think Kyle Korver) he will sometimes spot up instead of going to the basket, but this should be rare.

Fast breaks are still being tuned (at the moment it's a little too easy to get out on a break) but generally it is working really well. There's a lot going on under the hood in the transition game AI and it's pretty difficult to explain with showing you in game, so probably the best thing to do is to check out the demo in September and see what you think of what we did.

17.) Are you guys going to actually incorporate and put in things that we want in LIVE 08 or are you just going to listen and do it in LIVE 09?

The producers do read the boards on a regular basis, and the community managers are very good about passing along ideas and feedback from you guys to the team. We also get the leaders in the community to come to EA (or this year to the NBA Draft) to give us direct feedback and ideas, and I know a lot of what these guys ask for comes directly from the people posting on this site and others.

In the past our community days were later in the year, often making it too late for some suggestions and ideas to get incorporated into that year's game. One of things we wanted to do this year was talk to you guys earlier in the year so that we could make changes and adjustments based on your feedback and ideas, and I think this has been pretty successful. In fact we've been doing quite a bit of tuning this week on LIVE 08 based directly on the feedback we got at the NY community day.

i agree with u. 2007 was a disappointment. it couldn't have gotten any worse. let me give you nba live players out there an advice: never get urself too hyped from reading reviews, interviews and comments for game developers are taking advantage of those informational means. but i'm not saying you shouldn't read them, im plainly saying don't get carried away by excitement because of the impressive comments you've read from reviews. learn from me.
