Ex-senator’s son, 10 others told to answer drug raps

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a subpoena compelling the son of Genuine Opposition (GO) senatorial candidate John Henry “Sonny� Osmeña to appear during the preliminary investigation in Cebu to answer drug charges filed against him and 10 others.

Senior State Prosecutor Archimedes Manabat, head of the DOJ investigating panel, warned John Gregory “John-john� Osmeña, former Cebu vice governor, and his co-accused that failure to appear in the preliminary investigation will be considered as waiver to present their counter-evidence.

The preliminary investigation will be held on April 19 at the Office of the Regional State Prosecutor in Cebu City.

John-john, three of his former staff and seven others were charged before the DOJ for violationof Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act in connection with the alleged smuggling of P3.6 billion worth of pseudoephedrine, a shabu ingredient, three years ago.

The elder Osmeña earlier claimed Malacañang had a hand in the filing of the complaint to embarrass him since he is running for senator under the opposition slate.

John-john was reportedly going to run for Congress in Cebu’s first district. But after the case was filed, Sonny has said his son was advised by his (John-john’s) mother against returning to Cebu from the US. Sonny’s siblings, former governor Lito Osmeña and Annette Osmeña-Aboitiz, also told John-john not to run for public office.

John-John O may face extradition, Cuenco says

Former Cebu vice governor John Gregory Osmeña could be extradited to the Philippines by the United States to allow him to face charges that were filed against him, a lawmaker has said.

According to Cebu City Representative Antonio "Tony" Cuenco, House vice chairman of the committee on dangerous drugs, said the RP-US extradition treaty signed on November 29, 1995 would be applied to the former vice governor.

"The Department of Justice would pursue the extradition," Cuenco said.

A warrant of arrest has to be issued first against Osmeña before he could be extradited.

Osmeña and 10 others were charged with five offenses under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act or Republic Act 9165 before the Department of Justice in Manila in connection with the alleged smuggling of P3.6-billion worth of pseudoephedrine three years ago.

The charges were illegal importation of dangerous drugs or controlled precursor; attempt or conspiracy; criminal liability of government officials and employees; criminal liability of officers of partnership corporation; liability of a person violating any regulation issued by the board.

The others who were charged were Joebert Cuesta, Rorela Villegas, Maria Rowena Roldan, Dirk d'Hultz, Leah Banal, Malou Milagros Legazpi, Michael Emilio Sanchez, Alexander Castro and Susan Bernardo.

It’s strike 3 for ex-vice governor, who fails to answer complaint

FOR the third time, John Gregory “John-john� Osmeña failed to submit his counter-affidavit on the pseudoephedrine importation complaint against him.

This prompted the Department of Justice (DOJ) panel of prosecutors headed by State Prosecutor Archimedes Manabat to wrap up their preliminary investigation.

In an interview, Manabat said they already gave the former Cebu vice governor enough time to answer the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) evidence against him.

The PDEA filed last March a complaint at the DOJ against Osmeña, three former members of his Capitol staff, and several others.
