Default MERGED: NATIONAL TEAM and FIL-AM PLAYERS

it RP team is on a 5 month training in preparation for the asean olympic qualifiers this july on japan..

    RP team is comprised of

    Guards
    Jimmy Alapag
    RenRen Ritualo
    Mark Cagiuoa
    JayJay Helterbrand
    Dondon Hontiveros

    Forwards
    Danny Seigle
    Rudy Hafield
    Ranidel de Ocampo
    Kerby Raymundo

    Centers
    Asi Taulava
    Mick Pennisi

    Reserves
    Romel Adducul
    Enrico Villanueva
    Rafi Reavis

could philippines make it to the top 2 with this line-up?

personally, i think we could come up with a lot better line-up than that. we could send in willie miller instead of ritualo and kelly williams for romel adducul.

With Danny Seigle, Mark Caguioa and Asi Taulava in the Team, this Philippine team is definitely the 2nd best in Asia behind China. But I'm still wonderin why didn't they choose James Yap over Ren Ren Ritualo. And I hope Erik Menk was among the lineup as well, if only not for his injury.

i think the reason behind why james yap is not included is very obvious, who will score in the purefoods if both of them(kerby) is no longer in the team?
im just wond'ring ngano wala gikuha si willie miller....

ren-ren ritualo is definitely overrated. there's other better players who deserve a spot in the roster. willie miller, jaes yap, kelly williams and even gary david

the pba got most of its players from the top 4 teams, except for ranidel de ocampo

In defense of Ren-Ren Ritualo, he was chosen because of his previous experience with the national team under Chot Reyes. He is very comfortable in the international play. He is the leading scorer for the National Team in their previous exhibition games and tournaments before the training was put on hold.

Willie Miller is a known slasher, the National Team has Mark Cagiua who is a better slasher and can ran the fastbreak well with Jay-Jay Helterbrand. Mark can play the 2 and 3 position.

James Yap is only known for his offense, the National Team needs a pesky defender against the 3 point shooting guards of China, Japan and South Korea. Don-don Hontiveros is a long range bomber and a very reliable defender.

Kelly Williams would be a better option than Enrico Villanueva (the replacement of Rudy Hatfield), Kelly can hit the 3 point shot and is also a good defender. Maybe they needed a wide bodied forward to defend against the 6'10 forwards of China. Kelly is too lean to do the job.

Gary David hasn't trained with the National Team before. They got little time to prepare for the upcoming tournaments. That is why they choose players from the previous National Team training pool.

I believe we have the best National Team ever assembled right now. To win international ball we have to hit the 3 pointers and outside shots. Ran the fastbreak as much as possible so that the taller teams can't set its defense. We don't have the luxury in height that is why we need more shooters in every position in order to beat China, Lebanon and Jordan.

All of the players of our National Team can hit 3 points and outside shoots well except for Asi Taulava and Enrico Villanueva.

U.S.A NBA Dream Team was beaten by other teams in the previous tournaments because of outside shooting and ball movement. Superior tallent didn't help the U.S.A. Team. Argentina, Spain and Greece didn't have many superstars but they played teamwork basketball.

Hopefully we could duplicate the feat of Argentina, Spain and Greece.

China is not invinsible just like the U.S.A. South Korea even pulled an upset against China 2 Asian Games ago to win the Gold. While our National Team lost to South Korea by one point at the buzzer 3 point shot in the semi-finals.

The only problem now for our National Team is the lack of time to prepare and jell together.

My prediction is that the Philippines will have a basketball team in the Beijing Olympics.
