Made a quickie side trip to the Grand Canyon (South Rim) during a Las Vegas trip.
Summary:
1. It is about a 350 mile trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon South Rim. We left LV at around 5PM and arrived in Tusayan (about 5 miles south of the South Rim gate) at 10PM and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (around $149 per night). It is a nice place to stay and not too far from the gate. The nearest city with decent lodging is Williams which is about 50 miles further south.
2. Entered the South Rim gate at around 7 AM after a good breakfast at the hotel. Quickly went to the East Rim (Desert View Drive) for the requisite pictures. Doubled back to the visitors center for more photo opportunities. Made a quick stop at the market plaza for snacks and souvenirs then proceeded to the Grand Canyon village to hang out and browse some more merchandise.
3. Left at around noon for the trip back to Vegas after lunch at the Best Western.
4. Due to time constraints, we left out a few more stops but like what they all say, all the pictures and movies about the Grand Canyon do not start to capture the grandeur of this natural formation. Couple the visual experience with the geogologic history of the place (over 20 million years in the making, spanning eras and eons); the background facts will only add to the awe-inspiring experience.
A few photos--I forgot which observation points I took these, but all were taken around 8 AM.
