The concept of lightsaber is basically, from the name itself, light stopped midway in the air concentrated so much that it can cut through almost any object.

Kung huna2.on nimo, it's impossible to stop light from moving so lightsabers are basically impossible. Pero chui ghapon. XDD

Super weapon? It's impractical at best. If one already has plasma technology, a plasma beam directed at the target from long distance (and perhaps autoguided/autoaimed by AI) will beat a "light saber" any day. My steering of the topic toward plasma is only to provide a feasable avenue for such a device to actually work as described in the Star Wars universe.
