Advice on Choosing a Mistress
from a private letter by Ben Franklin,
Philadelphia, June 25, 1745


My dear Friend:

I know of no medicine fit to diminish the violent natural inclinations you mention; and if I did, I think I should not communicate it to you. Marriage is the proper remedy. It is the most natural state of man, and therefore the state in which you are most likely to find solid happiness. Your reasons against entering into it at present appear to me not well founded. The circumstantial advantages you have in view by postponing it are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with that of the thing itself, that being married and settled. It is the man and woman united that make the complete human being. Separate, she wants his force of body and strength of reason; he, her softness, sensibility, and acute discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the world. A single man has not nearly the value he would have in the state of union. He is an incomplete animal. He resembles the odd half of a pair of scissors. If you get a prudent, healthy wife, your industry in your profession, with her good economy, will be a fortune sufficient.

But if you will not take the counsel and persist in thinking of a commerce with the *** inevitable, then I repeat my former advice, that in all your amours you should prefer old women to young ones. You call this a paradox and demand my reasons. They are these: \

1. Because They have more knowledge of the world, and their minds are better stored with observations, their conversation is more improving and more lastingly agreeable.

2. Because when women cease to be handsome they study to be good. To maintain their influence over men, they supply the diminution of beauty by an augmentation of utility. They learn to do a thousand services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old woman who is not a good woman.

3. Because there is no hazard of children, which irregularly produced may be attended with much inconvenience.

4. Because through more experience they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an intrigue to prevent suspicion. The commerce with them is therefore safer with regard to your reputation. And with regard to theirs, if the affair should happen to be known, considerate people might be rather inclined to excuse an old woman, who would kindly take care of a young man, form his manners by her good counsels, and prevent his ruining his health and fortune among mercenary prostitutes.

5. Because in every animal that walks upright the deficiency of the fluids that fill the muscles appears first in the highest part. The face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the neck; then the breast and arms; the lower parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: so that covering all above with a basket, and regarding only what is below the girdle, it is impossible of two women to tell an old one from a young one. And as in the dark all cats are gray, the pleasure of corporal enjoyment with an old woman is at least equal, and frequently superior; every knack being, by practice, capable of improvement.

6. Because the sin is less. The debauching a virgin may be her ruin, and make her for life unhappy.

7. Because the compunction is less. The having mad a young girl miserable may give you frequent bitter reflection; none of which an attend the making an old woman happy.

It took a little while to plow through 18th century American English, trying to understand what this thread is about. It is a sad eye-opener to learn that such a brilliant mind as Benjamin Franklin, gave such an advise.

By 18th Century American English, mistress means a wife in modern English.

Have you noticed it mai dear TS?

Not once did your affectionate Mr. Franklin mentioned about L O V E?

This document is 637 words, 2935 characters, make that 3580 characters if you include the spaces, yet, no mention of LOVE in it. Weird advise .. isn't it?

Is love a modern invention by MJ when he sang Give Love on Christmas Day?

Really it is sad to know that one of the founding fathers of the most powerful nation on earth never knew that LOVE is and should be the ONLY rightful reason for two people to be together.

And you really took your time counting the characters of this letter huh? Incredible! And to think, this very same piece of a letter had once been censored in its time of publication due to its being obscene. I wonder if this has been just B. Franklin's humorous way of advising a friend on choosing an older mistress over the young and a way for us to delight our thoughts on some truths about his points of reasons. Though not really applicable to all but somehow it can be a good option (most especially to the old bachelors there).

Here's my attempt to simplify Ben's reasons for favoring the older mistress over the young ones.
According to him, older women are more experienced in life and thus are :

1) More interesting conversationalist,
2) More Service -oriented,
3) Safer in ***,
4) More Secretive,
5) Superior in ***,
6) Lesser guilt ,
7) Lesser regrets, and
Ever so grateful...

Bugoy gyud ni si anhing Ben dah or maybe he speaks of his own experience too. Heheheh. But to be very blunt about this note, I don't agree with him entirely.

Whether he was serious or just plainly trying to be funny on this letter, one thing is clear to me. That marriage should not be an answer to any of man's incurable sexual urge, of wanting to experience unlimited *** with less guilt. It should never be. And I am just glad that I wasn't born during this time, when women don't shave their legs, armpits, and perhaps even down under. I couldn't fathom how grassy, err messy, making love was. Maybe that's why "in the dark, all cats are grey" back then...oh, Ben...

4) More Secretive,- I say, not all.

5) Superior in ***,- I say, they may be superior in bed but superiority in ***, satisfaction does not always equate in fulfillment.

6) Lesser guilt ,- I say, respect to elders diay? Dili diay ka maguilty ana?

7) Lesser regrets, and- I say, this is only applicable to those who use *** as a necessity and a priced commodity.

This is the kind of thread that stimulates both cerebral energies as well as possibly senses at the groin areas...though they are actually just networked just the same.

I wonder if our friend Mr. Ben Franklin was speaking from experience..hmmm

As a man of varied interests, pursuits and skills, he must have been exposed to the fine brothels of Paris during his days there. Having been born on Milk Street in Boston, MA, the guy must have extra skills in sucking and licking and found those parts of older women more suitable for him.

But I would like to believe that since he was a writer and author from an early age, this letter of his must have been figments of his vivid imagination. Well, I would say, practical advice perhaps for those who are seeking safe and free "unli-toyi"..

However, my firm belief is that choosing a mistress on the part of men..and vice versa. has to be an interactive process. It comes about with more than just age as prime consideration, in fact, the familiar adage comes into play.. age does not matter.. to a certain degree of course.
