For 25 years, Cebu’s Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) has saved and helped many lives in major emergency cases.
This 2011, ERUF will mark its silver anniversary with a running event “ERUF 161 Run” on September 11, 2011 at the North Reclamation Area, Mandaue. The “161” in the race’s title is from ERUF’s 161 telephone hotline.
The first-ever ERUF run is also a fundraiser event to equip all of ERUF’s ambulances with new portable defibrillators, medical devices used to deliver a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to a heart that’s afflicted with life-threatening cardiac arrest.
The run will have three categories, the 3-kilometer, 6k and 12k with P250 registration fee inclusive of a race singlet, race map and bib and refreshments.
The top 10 finishers will receive cash while registration sites are located in all ERUF bases and at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Deadline for registration is September 10. Special awards will be given to the youngest and oldest runner and the best in costume.
ERUF’s 25th anniversary will also commemorate the US 9/11 terrorist attack, which claimed many lives. ERUF is the second unit in Asia; the other is in Hong Kong that was accredited by the United States as an elite pre-hospital service.
Thus, ERUF will also conduct a simulation exercise on mass destruction and multiple casualty scenarios caused by a natural disaster at Mandaue City Reclamation Area.
The disaster scenario is that a magnitude 8 earthquake strikes Cebu and destroys major infrastructures and facilities including the collapse of buildings, sudden fires, hazardous chemicals or materials leakage, and the ruin of the airport leading to an airplane crash. All through out, there are many casualties, suffering from mind to near-fatal injuries.
The exercise is open for public viewing.
