Default Canon 600d vs. Nikon D5100. Which is better for video?

    Currently using Canon S95.

    Zero experience with Slr cameras.

Need an entry level slr that can also make good videos. Need this to work with after effects/premiere.

Which of the two cameras is better for shooting video?

Shooting pictures is also important but video is my main purpose for the cam.

Dedicated video cam is cheaper if not better but not all things are easily achieved by a normal video cam vs DSLR like very shallow DOF. Other than shallower DOF, i don't see any obvious advantage of a DSLR video.

Generally, Canon has the edge on video. The kit lens sucks though for stills. But for video, doesn't matter much except for varying aperture when zooming when at max aperture. (Instead, pair it with a 24-105 F/4 L)

For stills, get the Nikon for ergonomics and better kit lens, Canon entry DSLR sucks on ergonomics, just the small grip alone make me stay away from entry level canons.

I'd prefer an SLR than can do video cause I don't have an SLR yet and would like to venture into Photography also.

I also heard that a lot of people use DSLR's for video na karon.

(just got married and would need a DSLR for the baby pics and videos)

just get the nikon. even the D3100 is just fine, it's cheaper also.

Canon kit lens suck because it uses a eletric motor and it's noisy, while the nikon uses a silent wave motor. focusing is silent for nikon and the video can barely if not pickup the sound.

Like i said the nikon has better grip. D5100 and D3100 almost the same size and build . get the D3100 over D5100 save your money for something else, a dedicated Video cam perhaps

dude i suggest you get a canon if you are planning on video recording. although the best option would go for a mirror-less camera which is Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 the best interchangeable lens with a mirror-less body.(nose-bleed na hahaha) anyway the second option would be the Canon's 5D MkII which damn expensive and that is followed by Canon's 7D if yoo could afford it then go for it. Next would be the Nikon's 5100 with their famous autofocusing for video recording, next would be Canon's 550D. and you won't really be having a problem with the "NOISY ELECTRONIC FOCUSING " on Canon. Why? Heck it's on manual focus when you do video. Another problem with autofocusing for nikon is when you do DOF's you get the tendency to go out-of-focus mainly it is a firmware problem and to solve it would be upgrading the firmware of the camera. anyway just try to check and find out what's the reason why national geographic, cnn, abs-cbn, fox, and lately hollywood uses canon dslr's for almost everything and not CCD cameras anymore. one of it's main reason would be price difference
the best suggestion I can give you if youre in cebu go to photoshop in baseline and look for peter go he knows almost every product by heart since he is selling it by heart. just be sure to inform him of the original plan that you have and tell him of the price range of your budget.
always remember canon, nikon, olympus, mamiya, hasselblad or what system you got, it is not the camera or the lens that you use to make good pictures or videos it is your creativity. it's not the bow and arrow it's the arrower. hahaha bring out the indian in you as Lito Inso would say

I prefer the two cams above because the tilt/swivel lens helps with videos.

whew . that's a lot of info to absorb... budget nako is less than 1,000 usd for the camera. Will heed your advise and check with Peter Go in baseline.

I've also been reading up on reviews on the 2 cameras mentioned... it seems the Canon 600d has manual volume adjustment while the Nikon d5100 is supposed to have more autofocusing capabilities.

Mas nindot gyud to get feedback from actual users sa camera here...

    thanks for the tips everyone.
