Default ABS-CBN Journalists Stand Up for the Filipino in ‘Krusada’

The crusade of the Filipino for the Filipino is about to begin.

From ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, comes a program with the courage to take a stand and fight for change in the country— “Krusada.”

This Thursday (Dec 9) after “Bandila,” “Krusada” will start acting on and responding to the biggest and most pressing issues in each sector of society, spearheaded by the best and veteran journalists of ABS-CBN such as Ted Failon, Ces Drilon, Henry Omaga-Diaz, Lynda Jumilla, Gus Abelgas, Dyan Castillejo, Karen Davila, Julius Babao, and Noli “Kabayan” De Castro.

“We don’t effect change with words alone. Sometimes, we have to take a stand. ABS-CBN journalists are ready to become true agents of change and it is through ‘Krusada’ that they can push for their own advocacies for the Filipino people,” said ABS-CBN Head for News and Current Affairs Ging Reyes.

This is why in the first airing of “Krusada,” Ces Drilon will tackle an issue that is especially close to her heart—the issue on reproductive health. Drilon visited Fabella Hospital, a hospital in Manila renowned for delivering babies. Here she met Aling Zeny who has given birth to her tenth child. Zeny said that she didn’t want another child after their last. However, they had no access to contraceptives.

Drilon also went to Baseco, Manila where she met Evelyn who was pregnant with her eighth child. The mother doubts as to whether they can still send their children to college. Meanwhile, another mother, Marissa is pregnant with her seventh child and plans to have her child adopted the moment she gives birth.

Their different narratives show the need for a more effective and comprehensive family planning program. A reproductive health program that will protect the women and the children is Drilon’s crusade for the country.
Advocacy journalism that gives a clear standpoint and concrete action—this is what “Krusada” is all about. Because true public service is propelled by action, not merely words.

Watch out for the airing of “Krusada” after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

Krusada: Reproductive Health | ABS-CBN News | Latest Philippine Headlines, Breaking News, Video, Analysis, Features

According to the Human Development Report, almost 2 million babies are born in the Philippines every year. With the 4,000 born every day, only 1 out of 8 will get to finish college. What is more, only one out of five graduates comes from the poor families.

The Women’s Healthcare Foundation has been in Baseco for 2 decades now. They provide family planning advice but cannot afford to give contraceptives like pills and condoms for free. Their funds are inadequate, just like at the Baseco Health Center. They can only offer natural family planning methods for couples who cannot afford contraceptives.
Half of the pregnancies among poor families are unwanted and unplanned. More often than not, parents are unprepared. Krusada’s pilot episode called for concrete government action and firmly supports the comprehensive family planning program. December 14, 2010

    Krusada: CHILD Haus

    Anchor: Henry Omaga Diaz

Fifty-two children and twelve adult patients who came from the provinces with their guardians seek temporary shelter in the Center for Health Improvement and Life Development or CHILD Haus, one of the beneficiaries of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

It serves as a halfway house for parents and their children as they seek medical assistance to hospitals in Manila for diseases that cannot be attended to by provincial hospitals such as cancer and hydrocephalus. An estimated total of 140 people live in the charity foundation.

CHILD Haus is a joint partnership of 4 institutions: 3 Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GOCC) and one non-governmental organization (NGO). The Ricky Reyes Foundation is the principal sponsor although PCSO aids by paying for their electricity and water, as well as allowing them to use one part of the PCSO compound. In addition, PCSO is bound to grant P100,000 of monthly support to CHILD Haus as one of their selected beneficiaries.

Dr. Rachel Rosario, Project Director of CHILD Haus says they were caught off guard; even the funds they rely on do not reach the center anymore. What will happen to the patients now?

Julius Babao Pushes for a House for Every Filipino in ‘Krusada’

(Dec 30), Julius Babao will answer why there is a scarcity in houses and why the Philippine housing program is flawed in “Krusada” on ABS-CBN.

    Anchor: Julius Babao

Due to lack of development and the lack of employment, people from the rural areas flock to the metropolis. With no other place to go to in the city, they have no choice but to squat in vacant, but most of the time, private lots.
Mang Pitong's house at Sitio San Roque

These people are commonly called “squatters”. They are not actually homeless, per se, but because they do not own the land they live in, they are still considered to be a part of the equation. A more politically correct term for them would be “informal settlers”.

According to the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), there is a deficiency of 3.7 million houses for the poor. Half a million is needed in Metro Manila.

With a populace of 2.7 million people, Quezon City is the most inhabited area in the whole Metro Manila. Despite the rise in real estate, the number of informal settlers rose to 230,000—the highest number of informal settlers in the Philippines. Most realty developments (if not all) are instigated by private companies and are definitely not catered for the poor.

Julius Babao Leads ‘Krusada’ Versus Hunger

Julius Babao tackles the biting reality about Filipino families who have no food to eat everyday.

Two out of ten Filipino families have no food to eat every day due to poverty. The children from these families even suffer more as they struggle in school because of hunger.

This is one of the biting realities Filipinos face every day, and one that every Filipino should also help alleviate, if not eradicate.

Babao, in his own capacity, has supported the Food Donation Act and other school-based nutrition programs that aim to feed nutritious food to students and also to avoid the waste of food.

Join him as he discovers the steps the government is taking to curb hunger, and how significant the role being played by the private sector and the public in this crusade. Individuals can help by just not wasting food and by sharing excess food items to the needy.

Listen, take part and be one with Julius Babao’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada” this Thursday after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

Gus Abelgas Pushes for Protection for Journalists in ‘Krusada’

It is the crusade of “Scene of the Crime Operatives” (SOCO) anchor Gus Abelgas to push for a law that ensures the safety and protection of journalists when it comes to their work.

This Thursday (March 3) on “Krusada,” Gus will investigate if it’s truly becoming more dangerous to become a journalist these days. Is it really difficult to find solutions to bring justice to the victims and end media killings?

Karen Davila Champions Whistleblower Protection Act in ‘Krusada’

    March 9, 2011 by ABS-CBN

There are three chapters in the life of a whistleblower according to Archbishop Oscar Cruz. First, he tells the truth. Second, the public will believe him, and third some people will try to take his life.

This is the risk that whistleblowers like Jun Lozada, Col. George Rabusa, Sandra Cam, and Sgt. Vidal Doble had and continue to face after telling the world what they know about the scams and the scums in the government.

This Thursday (Mar 10) in “Krusada,” Karen Davila will expose the plight of whistleblowers who have to change houses from time to time and give up their jobs in fear for their lives.

Karen has spoken to many whistleblowers as part of ABS-CBN News and “The Correspondents.” Witnessing the sorry state of their lives has driven her to push for the Whistleblower Protection Act, a law that protects and addresses the needs of whistleblowers.

While they get fame and the people’s support, they also become targets of individuals or groups who want to silence them. Is this the price of telling the truth?
Listen, take part and be one with Karen Davila’s crusade for the whistleblowers this Thursday (Mar 10) in “Krusada,” after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN. Because it takes more than words to make a stand.
