i dont know about the church's views,
to me if a soul dies, he can not be aware of anything anymore.

i dont believe in heaven or hell.

i believe when we die our soul goes back to god.
our soul is part of god's soul.

our soul is a recording of our deeds and decisions in our life.
as our soul goes back to god,
it carries with it information about your life on earth (or wherever).

then god will reward your soul ---if it accomplished the mission it was given by god.
if you've done well in that life,
god will reward you with additional talents.
it will be added to your soul before you reincarnate
or before you are reaassigned to another body..
mao nang naay mga bata nga gagmay pa lang naa nay exceptional talents.

so by my beliefs your father will be reincarnated, but without any memory of his past life.
dont worry about him. his soul is with god.

we shed our bodies in death like removing our clothes.

the soul lives on. the soul is immortal. unless it chooses to destroy itself.

and someday will find a rebirth.

My father is also deceased... If you ask me what I think, he is somewhere out of this physical world already. He is not preoccupied anymore with the affairs of mortal men. But I am sure in the future, we will see each other again.

The afterlife is a complicated topic and this thread might go on forever..
