That Iraq was invaded for its precious natural resource (i.e. oil) is probably true. However, the same cannot be said for Afghanistan (unless the US wants to control the world's supply of opium). But even though it has nothing to gain economically from being in Afghanistan, it can't just pull out. Otherwise, the Taliban are just going to come right back in.

Since Afghan society is still very tribal, there won't be a strong central government for the foreseeable future. Western-style democracy will remain a Utopian wish. The presence of the US and NATO allies are going to play a vital role for years to come.

Then there's the problem of Pakistan, the only nuclear-armed Islamic state. The Afghanistan issue cannot be divorced from Pakistan. The Taliban movement, after all, is a Pakistani export. The Pakistani security forces, the intelligence service in particular, are all at once fighting and aiding the Taliban. And with US military aid money that runs into the billions. Right now the US and Pakistan are allies (despite the double dealing by the military), but what happens if the moderate government is ousted by radical Islamist extremists or people sympathetic to them? Then the United States--not to mention the rest of the world--will be in really deep doo-doo.

At some point, however, the USA will be more and more involved in combating the rising terror threat in Yemen. Al Qaeda is getting more and more active there.
