Default Help with DVD Writer Decision

    Hi!

I'm planning on buying a DVD Writer to copy from my friends' (freeloading! :O) since I don't have Broadband...yet... and also watch movies and backup files.

First, should I go for LIghtscribe? How much do the DVDs cost and where can I buy them? Cool man gud ang Lightscribe and naa man P2400 daw na drive, so ok ra kau.

Second, would all this work on my old Pentium3 800MHz PC? :O I mean watching DVDs and everything.

Last, will this all work if I buy a USB-3.5" Enclosure thinggy?

    Thanks!

Lightscribe media have gone down in prices lately so go ahead if the drive is not that much more. Using an enclosure for your DVD writer to make it an external one should work alright with your aging PIII machine. The only problem is that your system will only have USB1 (most modern external drives these days takes advantage of the faster Hi-Speed USB2), so in your case...data transfer from your PC to the external drive will take much more longer.

So if you really wanna do this, purchase a PCI USB2 card also (though PCI's peak transfer rate of 133MB would still be a bottleneck, it would still be slightly faster).

i think the P2400 is the price of the drive itself. anyways, if he was referring to an LG h20a, that would cost p2400 at pcx, comes with lightscribe.

@obemon: Thanks for the advice, I'm actually using a laptop, so PCI is out of the question. I think I'll go for the Lightscribe one. I hope that the disks will soon be like P10 per disk para daghan ko mapalit!hehehe

@king_coy: yup, that's right..it's the drive itself and either a samsung or LG one. I'm still gonna buy a cheap enclosure at CDR King cguro

ok raman ang 800Mhz as during DVD writing the processor usage does not go more than 5% so if basihan na2 nas 3.0Ghz processor it only needs about 150Mhz of CPU assistance to write the data, the imporant part here is that you have sufficient ram here ( the VERY least of 500MB FREE ) and a suitable harddrive sub system for the specificed write speeds.

For your USB question its 5.25" ang gamiton ana since thats a full length drive.
if your USB port is still USB 1.0 or 1.1 i think your going to have problems if you write at speeds higher than 4x since USB1 takes a lot of CPU overhead, all you can do is try it out. as i cant guarantee anything, as some factors such as RAM,Harddisk subsystem,USB version and finally the current running programs.

But if your PC is well optimized you can write to 16x internally or via USB1.0 if you have USB 2.0 then its a lot better.
