I'm a bit confusion as to what the wifi usb dongle/adapter really does.

Is it just a wireless PCI card substitute or can i really use it as a wireless router?

My pc and laptop are connected to the internet through a "wired" router and I wanted to connect my nintedo ds as well with somekind of usb cable but no such device exists.

Is it possible to detect wifi on my nintendo ds if I plug in a wifi dongle in my pc or laptop?

Actually it depends on the wifi dongle that you will purchase. There are some wifi dongle that can do both things, it can connect to a wifi router OR it can function as a wifi router. I was able to buy a wifi usb dongle at cd-r king that can function as both a connector to a wifi router OR you can set it to become a wifi router. It came with a software. Good luck.
