All current desktop processors from Intel and AMD can support 64-bit operating systems.
Choose what's best for you. 4GB of system memory or more is recommended.
I would not recommended Win XP 64-bit as an OS of choice.
Get Windows Vista Ultimate x64 or better get Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

not sure on the old XP if naa pay 64bit versions available... but for newer procs.. vista 64 and the latest win 7 64bit..

here's a sample what a 64bit can do on windows vista. notice a lots of application running behind it.
to be able to use 64bit windows you must have a decent hardware. i think all processor nowadays can handle 64bit instructions. but for the ram you must have atleast 4gig on your system. and i think 64bit can allocate more than 128gig of ram.

You will not benefit from 64 bit OS unless you do heavy multitasking (like the guy above), Virtualization or if it is a development/workstation machine running SQL servers, VS2008s, 3D rendering etc etc.

16gb of RAM will eat your applications for breakfast.

Most modern CPUs support 64 bit Computing naman sad.
