Only particle physicists can answer this question accurately in this board, the rest of us can only speculate, which would only then lead to a thread that would be circular in nature (i.e. "chicken and egg"), because the speculations offered by others will just mix with the other speculations and thus (at least in my opinion) has the potential to distort the nature of why the question was asked in the first place) unless of course we have an iStoryan who's also a particle physicist.

exactly what sir Rod said. hehe! although I'm still a young physicist, I still can not tackle all the required background for particle physics. You need so understand so many many things from General Relativity to Quantum Field Theory. You question about whether if we can harness it or not, we do not simply know. Particle physicists are still even trying to confirm its existence. I do know one very very good retired physicist here in Cebu who can probably tackle this subject. He is Dr. Felix Buot. He used to work in a top secret US naval research center. He specializes in Nanotech. He know so much advance physics from the highest level of quantum physics to standard model. He gave talks to us before and even with our low knowledge in the field he showed us some mighty beast-like supper equations to describe quantum transport.

so for now, these things about dark energy are really not of our reach. I won't even touch it even though I have some little background about it which is I still don't think is sufficient. =)

dark energy is 1 of the 4 components of the universe. just like darkmatter , it also contribute a bigpart of the whole/
