Default US Catholic Church PAID $436 MILLION FOR S*X CRIMES BY CLERGY

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US Roman Catholic church has paid out 436 million dollars in 2008 for S*X abuse cases involving clergy members, according to an official report aimed at healing deep wounds of the scandal that blew up in 2002.
The bulk of the money -- more than 374 million dollars -- was paid out in settlements to victims, according to the report that tracks how well the church is implementing a charter to protect children.
The sums paid out in settlement had fallen 29 percent compared with the record 526 million dollars paid in 2007, the report showed.
Around 22 million dollars went to therapy for victims or support for accused offenders last year, showed the report, commissioned by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for the past six years.
While costs to the church related to the s*x abuse scandal fell across the board, the number of new allegations and victims both rose by 16 percent, however.
The report showed that 803 new allegations of abuse -- over half of which were from children -- were lodged last year, compared with 692 in 2007.
Just over half of the new allegations involved abuse cases that were said by the accusers to have occurred or begun between 1960 and 1974. Most of the alleged perpetrators are either dead or no longer in ministry.
The report also said that the number of victims also rose, from 689 in 2007 to 796 in 2008.
Two-thirds of the victims were male, and more than half were under the age of 18 when the abuse occurred.
More than one in five victims was under age 10 when they were abused, and there were 10 new credible allegations of abuse last year to a person still under the age of 18, the report said.
The annual review tracks progress made in implementing the Charter for the Protection of Children, which was adopted by US bishops in 2002 after the institution plunged into crisis with the Archbishop of Boston's confession that he protected a priest he knew had sexually abused young members of his church.
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the USCCB, said in a statement Friday that the church was "on the right path" in its quest to better protect "all children in society."
But the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) faulted the report for focusing on victims of the abuse, while not highlighting "bishops who keep hiding crucial information about church pedophiles that could actually prevent future childhood trauma."
"Virtually no bishop holds anyone responsible for concealing predators," said SNAP official Barbara Dorris.
To compile the report and track compliance with the charter, the church conducted audits of the 195 dioceses and eparchies in the United States.
But seven dioceses and eparchies refused to be audited, including the Lincoln diocese in Nebraska, which has consistently blocked the church auditors.
"We're saddened but not surprised that once again Lincoln Catholic officials have chosen to not even do the bare minimum regarding child safety: participate in the annual review as mandated by the USCCB," said SNAP President Barbara Blaine in a statement.
"Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz claims the evaluation wouldn't 'place into context' the large number of priests who were not abusive.
"No one disputes that many priests lead truly admirable lives, but that does not negate the need to expose, bring to justice and protect kids from those clergy who commit horrific crimes against the innocent and the vulnerable," said Blaine, herself a victim of a predator priest when she was younger.
During a trip to the United States last year Pope Benedict XVI, the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics, went out of his way to heal the wounds left by the s*x scandal, saying he felt deeply ashamed by it.
He mentioned the scandal in nearly every homily and speech he gave during the six-day visit, and chastised the US church for its handling of it.

actually joshua, i dont think that's the reason why naay envelope. dili man ka forced to give... u give as u understand why u should give, and u give as much as u understand u should give, monetary wise... other than that, we do everything and give everything to glorify the body of Christ which is the CHURCH (wc is not the building but the fellowship of Christ's followers). kng follower ka ni Christ, apil ka sa CHURCH ui. silbi the reason why u become part of the church and dili mag-inusara is not just because of what u get from it but because of how much God has given you to give. bitaw, if u only know how much pastors are making... i don't know many pastors nga datu bya. sila pa gani mulimpyo sa simbahan, tig-ayo sa linkuranan. kng naay buslot ang atop, mao pay mukatkat muayo, hantud sa makaya aron dili na kailangn mugasto ba. it's not trading ur money for a preaching, but giving what God has blessed u with to bless the church...

mao ni nakahasol ani na klase na thread,

mawa ang sense sa real issue on *** scandals; on the real purpose of the priest or pastors or whatever (which is in a sense a representative of God in bodily form). We don't focus on how to correct the offenders, and fight for the rights of these victims.

musangko gyud dayn sa differences sa ato mga religions, or practices. nga dili maoy issue.

I think mao every year the church is paying for these crimes, it's because the leaders don't deal with it in its face value.

Angay mag TAX tanan nga gadawat ug kwarta ma pa religious, charitable, non-profit, etc
    pero unsa-on pag TAX ana?

very sad ... this is an issue that is not confined to RC ... i still believe that seminaries should be very strict in admitting candidates to the priesthood or pastor ... because it will lessen, if not eradicate, the problems and scandals especially regarding sexual abuse and perversions ... emotionally and socially fit candidates are what the church needs ... psychologically unfit candidates will bring immense problems to the church later on when they will be inserted to their ministry...

aw... kahibaw ko nga ang mga pastor, pari, etc. dili dato. mura gud og politico basta mo datu ang atoang government official kay mag duda dayon ta asa sila gikan og kwarta? and og dili sad sila mo trabaho sa ilang simbahan dili sila maka attract og followers. and if dili sila maka attract of followers dili sila maka generate og kwarta. mao nang maka ingon gud ko nga good business gud kaayo ang simbahan. what you see in cebu is just the tip of the ice berg. try attending the church here in the US you would certainly understand what i mean about business.

naka simba ko og simbahan sa cebu nga og member gud ka before ka mo sulod naa silay envelope nga ehatag nimo onya naa pa imong pangalan naka tatak den the bible stated that you have to give at least 10% or an offering to god or the church. so onsa man diay ang reason mo hatag sila og envelope nimo nga naay name nimo? and does god need your money? no, the people need your money not god. why not help directly the person in need not thought the preaching of some priest, pastor, etc.? i know nga ni hatag og blessing ang ginoo nako pero dili ko ganahan maminaw nga naay mag ingon nako nga buhata ni para sa simbahan kay ang simbahan maka tabang sa ubang tao.

and so if ang simbahan mo ingon nga ang kwarta gi gamit para tabang sa ubang tao nganong naa man silay $436 million nga savings? asa man sila maka generate og ingana nga kwarta if gamiton sa church para mo tabang? and why man sad ang mga men of god naka buhat og gi dili sa biblia? i know human ta pero naka huna2x ko. do i really need the church to believe and follow god? nga mismo ang mga bata2x sa pari, pastor, etc. kay dili man maka sunod sa onsay gi ingon sa biblia.

naa rana ninyo og mo oppose mo sa akoang gipang ingon pero naka mata gud ko why i do not need the church to pray. don't tell me that i don't have the right to pray to god just because i don't need a church.
