Default Broadband Over Power Lines (BOPL)

FORGET about SMART WI-EFFECT and other costly DSL subscriptions..here comes Nextream (BOPL) to the rescue..hopefully ma implement ni in the shortest time possible

Power co-ops agree to bring Internet to the countryside

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Nextream has developed an integrated system that is capable of reaching transmission speeds of up to 200 Mbps over low and medium voltage power lines, thus rivaling metropolitan and access networks with the chance for the service providers to extent their value proposal to customers offering them voice, video and data services—what is known as “3 Play services” over the same infrastructure,” Javellana said.

Nextream will be providing high- end technologies such as voice over Internet protocol, video streaming similar to cable TV and Internet gateway by the use of broadband over power lines and wireless networking.

Here's the scope on BOPL IEEEE standards..

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IEEE P1901 Draft Standard for Broadband over Power Line Networks: Medium Access Control and Physical Layer Specifications

    Scope

The project will develop a standard for high speed (>100 Mbps at the physical layer) communication devices via alternating current electric power lines, so called Broadband over Power Line (BPL) devices. The standard will use trannsmission frequencies below 100 MHz. This standard will be usable by all classes of BPL devices, including BPL devices used for the first-mile/last-mile connection (<1500m to the premise) to broadband services as well as BPL devices used in buildings for LANs and other data distribution (<100m between devices). This standard will focus on the balanced and efficient use of the power line communications channel by all classes of BPL devices, defining detailed mechanisms for coexistence and interoperability between different BPL devices, and ensuring that desired bandwidth and quality of service may be delivered. The standard will address the necessary security questions to ensure the privacy of communications between users and allow the use of BPL for security sensitive services. This standard is limited to the physical layer and the medium access sub-layer of the data link layer, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Basic Reference Model. The effort will begin with an architecture investigation, and this will form the basis for detailed scope of task groups that will work within P1901 to develop the components of the final standard.

I've seen this gi-feature sa BBC... i think there was an interference issue with this technology...

there wud be always interference.. well actually WIRED or WIRELESS local are network gets interference....

Yes but the interference is more than the usual with shielded network wires...

it would still be hard for us here to adopt such technology. First, the electric companies doesn't have their own dedicated data infrastructure. Still they would be dependent to telcos for their gateway. Second, the health and status of our power distribution lines. gubot pa sa lukot! If we experience disconnections in our DSL lines na dedicated line and infra, how much more in this set up.

The technology is fine, but with our power line/ distribution situation,...DSL nlang ko.

@TAMBLOT..that is why Nextream taps the major electric distributor in the country to test the viability of their technology..if things will go smoothly then we will now have more choices of ISPs.
