Default Puppy mills: Dogs live to breed.

Do you know where that cute little pup for sale in the window came from?

We adopted a dog from a shelter last year and I began to wonder if she'd been dumped from a puppy mill after our vet explained that she was surprised to see that at roughly two years old, she'd been pregnant many, many times. She was scared, emaciated and we had no clue where she came from and why.

Not only what our vet said concerned me, but after looking into some "breeders" here's what I found.

Female dogs at some "breeding farms" are alive to breed until they refuse to produce. If the puppy farm operator has no use for her anymore, he sets her loose. They often have several square meters of land and yet store the dogs in rabbit cages, standing on wire mesh -- never feeling solid earth beneath their feet. These innocent dogs are "assets" as long as they produce. Their inhumane living conditions leave them with no room to move, no human contact, laying in their own fecies, likely ill.

The puppies, with normally ill health, get shipped off to pet stores across the city -- and buyer beware -- the pet stores (even some of the most posh of shops) may tell you they only get their puppies from "Breeders". And unfortunately, weeks or months later, the proud and happy new puppy owner finds their new canine baby with some sort of "mystery" illness.

dog lovers are sometime put in a dilemma. like in my case, kabantay mo dha robi? daghan kaau iro dnha baligya.. then pakan-on lng ug kan-on butangan sabaw, wa gani unod. then kabaw jd ka na puppy mill.. they're after the profit jd not for the better of the dogs. and then i saw this one puppy... luoy kaau siya. i know na dogs are supposed to be playful pro siya kay puyo kaau siya. i didn't even think na cute siya. it was half shih tzu/pomeranian breed. i dont want nga mupalit kay it's like ur encouraging these people to exploit animals... pro i thot i could give a good home to that little puppy. i had 3 dogs then sa balay.. they are all happy dogs and i love them immensely. and then i thought about the puppy... wat happens to him kng dili sya mahalin? i dont think those people would even care.

so i was put in a situation that i wanted to help the puppy but i don't want to support puppy mill... but then my feelings toward the puppy won. i bought the puppy. but i made it a very hard sale. they were selling him for 3K, i got him for 1.5K.

days after i brought him home, he started to show kng unsa siya kaplayful. even my older dogs got irritated kay kng sa taw pa mura jd siyag deprived childhood and finally he really is a child.

up to now, he never lost his spirit. hyper ghapon kaau and he grow up to be such a handsome doggy. he's now 8 months. he's been with me for 6 months... pro i promised myself to never ever buy dogs again from those people.. pro luoy jd. i even told my bf that if i was super rich, id build an orphanage for children AND dogs...

believe it or not but my best friends are my dogs. theyr'e the most loyal little person i know.

naa sad unta ta laws to protect the animals.. kanang laws na followed jd ha, not jst documented. luoy mn gud sila... promise. i had my share of heartbreaks when i was a kid.. kanang dili paka makadecide on your own. i adopted all kinds of living creature na ako makit-an sa dalan... then id hide it kay my parents wont allow me to keep them. of course, bata pmn gud ko so no matter how strongly you feel about keeping them, you end up following what your parents told you. and because i was young, and my parents are not giving me the support, mamatay jd ako mga gibuhi.. because they were too young. mga 1 month puppy, mga 2 week old kittens... that's why when i was in HS na, i get to keep my own dogs jd. i had a dog na niabot siya ug 16 years. he died of old age. taas na kaau ko sturya.. its jst that sometimes these precious gifts to human kind are not being treated for their worth. mao lng na. mglagot jd ko kita kog mga taw na manapat ug mga stay dogs. unya dli raba aggressive ang iro.. kana ra gud mangita ug fud then muduol sa mga taw kay mgtuo na tagaan pro makatilaw ra ug sikad. grrr! maayo unta tog ma-iro pud sila bsan one day lng.. tan-awon nato di ba sila maluoy sa ilang self.

it is really disappointing to hear about breeders who are in it for the cash or so-called puppy millers.

dogs are wonderful living creatures with no other intentions than to live their lives with the purpose of being one of our greatest and loyal companions. just recently, people yearning for pet dogs are increasing across the Philippines. A lot of opportunistic people are diving into the so-called puppy-milling industry for the quick buck. having 3 female dogs would allow them to generate puppies without restrictions per year. they don't give proper vet care (vaccinations, supplements), proper play or exercise or at least the decent dog meal that they deserve. They say cute things over at istorya about how their dogs are good quality breeds but in truth, they are grown in leashes and cages most of the time. I've seen golden retriever dams in cages with their eyes so wet and in a condition that would really have you pity them on sight.

I have 2 shih tzu dogs and have recently adopted a golden retriever. My shih tzu dogs live indoors. sometimes sleeping by my side. my golden retriever still needs house-breaking so she still sleeps and eats in a well-matted cage and occasionally brought out of the cage to run around the lawn and to dispose waste naturally. once she reaches 3 months, she will start sleeping indoors. Our dogs are fed with air sealed nutritional food and clean distilled water. These are one of the proper ways of raising / breeding dogs, giving them the right attention and health care.

I've visited a number of breeders before getting a golden retriever of my own with intentions of adopting one and getting some useful tips on raising them the proper way. There are some who really are good breeders like the Aldeguers (GoldenHillsGoldens), Istorya's 'Recon25' and 'Goldenboy' they talk about their dogs a great deal showing that their dogs are a part of their household. But some are not as good unfortunately, we came across other breeders that had dams that are in poor health... teeth with a lot of decay, damaged coat, eyes that are watery (may be caused by worms or other bacteria). Just by looking at these physical attributes would certainly turn my head away with disappointment and sadness. Some had a lot of dogs from different breeds, would have been a sight to behold only if their dogs looked a little bit happier instead of being locked up in cages most of the time with deteriorating vitality. These multiple dog breed sellers are into the mass production of puppies depending on the demand of the market today.

There are some breeders who sell their dogs without care. They sell their puppies at an early stage then just forget about the buyer without following up on their sold puppies condition. Some new owners text or try to contact the breeder to no avail and their call for help just falls on deaf ears. These are breeders that are best to avoid buying from.

Good breeders are those who care for their pups, refusing to sell their puppies if they are not in a good state to separate from their mothers, they follow up on their sold puppies from time to time or listen and answer any inquiries from whom they have sold their pups to.

I hope I've shed some light with regards to this issue that would be of use to all and to all future dog owners.

We can help the dogs who are being maltreated out there in a lot of ways. As a start, we should make it a practice to give credit to those breeders we bought our dogs from, were they helpful? were they really affectionate towards their dogs? did we get our puppy in a very healthy state? do they answer to all your inquiries even after months of giving away their dogs? are their puppies great in temperament and health?

And we should also make it a practice to warn others of breeders / pet sellers that are irresponsible and are mere money mongers. Before buying a pet, look at the dam / sire and look into them closely, are they healthy and happy?

This way, we all have an idea of where is best to get a puppy from and who we should avoid buying from.
