Work on Laguindingan International Airport development project continues
    by Babes Jacob-Rebultan

Cagayan de Oro City (6 August) -- THE construction of the Laguindingan International Airport, one of the flagship projects of the Arroyo administration under the Mindanao Super Region program, is underway and targeted for completion by January 2012 based on the revised timetable set by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

According to a DOTC-10 project status report, that as of July 31, this year, the main civil works that started January 2008 with a project cost of P4.991 billion is now 3.65% complete where mobilization activities at the site is currently undertaken by the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC), a korean company.

The work includes the construction activities, construction of the Project Monitoring Office (PMO)/engineer's facilities and earthworks at airside and landside areas.

The acquisition of the access roads within the 24.11-hectare land had been completely acquired with a project cost of P32.719 million and the titling activities of the acquired properties are ongoing.

The construction of the access roads that started in July 2007 is now 48.9% complete. Its construction activities include embankment works, sub-grade preparation works, sub-base preparation works and drainage works.

Its detailed engineering and civil works procurement had been completed and the construction is scheduled to be fully accomplished by December 2008.

Also, the report stated that the civil works for the construction of the perimeter fence of the airport that was started in July, 2002 is 76.8% accomplished, but was temporarily suspended pending the acquisition of 94 hectares, the additional donation of the Ayala Corporation due to the non-completion of conversion of the affected properties from agricultural to commercial/industrial.

The main airport is situated in a 387.68-hectare land in Laguindingan town, west of Misamis Oriental and about 32 kilometers from the city of Cagayan de Oro and halfway towards Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.

Of the 387.68 hectares, a total of 289.97 hectares or 74.8% had been totally acquired, including the first donation from the Ayala Corporation.

The remaining lot to be acquired is still 94.39 hectares for additional donation by the Ayala and 3.32 hectares for acquisition from individual land owners other than the Ayala properties.

With this, a Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) between Ayala Corporation, Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and DOTC was signed on August 31, last year, which stipulated that Ayala will donate the 94.04 hectares after the approval of land use conversion in which DOTC acts as co-petitioner.

On July 15, 2008, the Land use conversion order was issued by DAR-central office.

The construction of the airport is based on international standards with a total project cost of P7.853 billion and is funded from a loan undertaken by the Philippine government with the government of Korea.

The total loan is payable in 20 years to be shouldered by the national government.

Once completed and operational by 2012, the Laguindingan airport is expected to cater to domestic flights and later to international flights, which will result to the closure of the more than 50 year-old Lumbia airport in Cagayan de Oro.

It will create employment, boost tourism and will accelerate and sustain the economic growth of the province, Northern Mindanao and entire island of Mindanao as a whole.

The presence of the airport will also boost the agri-business activity of the region as envisioned in the Mindanao Super Region strategy of the Arroyo administration. (PIA-10/MisOrOccCam) [top]

    Filinvest Land building ‘businessman’s hotel’
    05/13/2008 | 05:37 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Filinvest Land, Inc. will start building within the next four months a hotel for businessmen.

"A businessman’s hotel is a hotel that does away with other amenities except for those important to businessmen," said Tristan Las Marias, Filinvest vice-president for Visayas and Mindanao operations.

He said the hotel would not have convention halls and similar facilities. "But we will make sure that the amenities of the hotel are the best," he said during the inauguration of the company’s One Oasis, a condominium project near SM City Davao.

Mr. Las Marias declined to provide details of the project, which he said was still being finalized.

Councilor Peter T. Laviña of the city council’s trade and commerce committee said Filinvest Land’s plan shows that the city has matured into a business area. "With these investments coming in, we are sure that this will spur the city’s economic development."

The Gotianun-led company is spending P1.5 billion on its first condominium project here, dubbed One Oasis Davao. The company has earmarked P6 billion for the Davao region within the next five years. It is developing a 50-hectare residential beach resort in the island city of Samal.

Aside from its 2.3-hectare One Oasis Davao project — a seven-building cluster of medium-rise condominiums and condotels — the company is also setting up another condominium project in a three-hectare lot in Ma-a district near another shopping mall, the NCCC Mall of Davao. Filinvest Land Manager Geraldine C. de Gorostiza said the condominium projects target workers in the city.

Filinvest Land earlier said it would expand its project portfolio to include more medium-rise buildings as part of a plan to widen its client base. - Carmelito Q. Francisco, BusinessWorld

Oro a top tourist destination, confab city: exec

"WE HAVE started to open the eyes of the country that Cagayan de Oro is a convention city," said Vice Mayor Vicenete Emano even as he projected that the place will absolutely be the prime convention city in the next three years.

Emano issued the statement even as a US economic official said Cagayan de Oro is emerging as a "leading business hub within the Philippines."

Updates on the Kagay-an Festival 2007

"The city is clearly on the map for visitors who are well aware of this region's scenic beauty and exciting eco-tourism adventures," US Commercial Counselor Judy Reinke told participants and exhibitors at the opening of the Oro Best Expo 2007.

The event is a three-day business enterprise, services, and trade exposition organized by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Oro chamber) held at the Limketkai Atrium.

"Through this trade show and exhibition, it is even more firmly established as an economic center featuring thriving investment zones and related businesses," Reinke, the event's keynote speaker, said.

With the presence of 15 American brand name firms, the US embassy official said the event is an indication the US government is "well aware of the positive direction the city and economy has been taking."

"The firms shown here are marquee names, and all of them want to do business here. Some of these companies are well known to you and they come from a wide variety of industry sectors," Reinke, a first-time visitor, added.

Meanwhile, Emano said that for this month alone a number of national conventions are being held in the city such as the National Convention of the Philippine Nurses Association on October 23-25.

He cited that the city has also played host to other many activities.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) reported that for the first six months of this year, the city hosted 70 conventions, 848 seminar/workshops, and 29,914 other gatherings.

These events brought in 59,525 guests and delegates, according to the DOT. Mayor Emano said he expects these figures to increase.

With the major development that are now taking place in the hotel industry, the vice mayor projects that the city can go full blast as a convention city in the next three years.

He announced that instead of building just a 17-storey hotel, the management of the Limketkai Co. is now set for the construction of a 21-storey building in the commercial complex.

He said aside from providing more room for increasing number of guests, the construction of this building will make a name for the city as it will be the highest in Mindanao.
The vice mayor added that another 14-storey hotel will be constructed near the City Central School.

It was learned that the construction of another 17-storey building near the Nazareno Church is also now being finalized.

Vice Mayor Emano said based on studies, the city still needs about 2,400 hotel rooms to accommodate its guests.

The construction of the new high-rise hotels will provide about 1,000 additional rooms, he added.

Emano said these developments will boost efforts of the city government to make Cagayan de Oro an ideal tourist destination and a convention city. (Press release)
