Cebu lawyer ambushed



A well-known lawyer in Cebu province who is also the spokesman of the mayor of Lapu-Lapu City was shot by a lone gunman in the provincial capitol on Wednesday morning.

Lawyer Richard Sison, spokesman of Lapu Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza, was shot by a motorcycle-riding gunman at the corner V. Sotto Street and Cuenco Avenue, Cebu City around 11 a.m.

Sketchy reports said Sison was on board a pick-up truck during the ambush. He was rushed to Chong Hua hospital in Cebu City.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the body. There were still no reports about Sison’s condition at the hospital

Checkpoints have been set up around the city as the police searched for the gunman.

(UPDATE 2) Lapu-Lapu mayor’s lawyer dead after ambush

CEBU CITY, Philippines -- The lawyer of the beleaguered Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds more than two hours after he was ambushed near the port area in Cebu City on Wednesday.

Lawyer Richard Sison was declared dead at 1:30 p.m. despite efforts to resuscitate him, Cebu City Councilor Jack Jakosalem said.

Jakosalem said Sison was hit four times, twice each to the head and neck.

Police said Sison was driving his pick-up truck when fired on by one of at least two men on a blue motorcycle at the corner of M. J. Cuenco Avenue and V. Sotto St. near the port area at around 11:10 a.m.

Edwin Dilao of the Cebu City police Mobile Patrol Group (MPG) said Sison was on his way to a conference when the attack happened in front of the regional office of the Commission on Audit.

Sison, a member of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, was brought to the Chong Hua Hospital in critical condition.

Dilao said that initial reports on the crime said there were two assailants but updated reports said three men were on the motorcycle.

Two of the assailants wore brown and blue T-shirts and helmets while the triggerman was in a red T-shirt and was without a helmet.

Police were in “hot pursuit” of the assailants, Dilao said.

Sison served as lawyer of Mayor Radaza in at least two cases involving alleged overpricing of lampposts installed in the city overpricing of computers.
