Default Logitech G9x Gaming Mouse Review with interchangeable grips and weight-tuning options

Logitech G9x Gaming Mouse Review: With interchangeable grips and weight-tuning options by VR-Zone.com

Logitech, one of world's largest manufacturers of computer peripherals from mice to multimedia speakers, has a new member in their line of "G-series" gaming peripherals. What we have today is the Logitech G9x which features interchangeable grips, weight-tuning options and more. Let's go into the details.

    ntroduction:

The gaming market is booming, and it is no wonder peripherals makers like Logitech is coming up with more gaming products for the hardcore gamers. Their G series mice are widely received and this year, the company has given their G9 an upgraded sensor and called it the G9x. The G9x claims to have sensitity of up to 5700 dots per inch (DPI). The Logitech G9x comes packed in fancy green and orange box with a large transparent area that displays the mouse and for users to get a feel of how the mouse feels like. Opening the flap revealed an additional grip and an explanation of the difference and main features of the mouse.

    Features and Specification :

    Interchangeable grip
    Next-generation gaming laser
    Onboard memory
    Weight-tuning system
    Custom-colour LEDs
    On-the-fly adjustable DPI

Inside the packaging, there is a small tin box and an envelope containing a user's guide, a Logitech Setpoint disc, a quick guide, a USB usage and Logitech contact leaflets.

Out of the box, the Logitech G9x feels significantly heavier than most wired mice that we have ever cpme across. It comes with two interchangeable grip - Wide load grip and Precision grip.

The above is the wide load grip which has a round shape and a wider thumb rest with a soft rubbery satin finish for a comfortable palm grip.

The Precision grip, on the other hand, has a sharper and more compact shape with a rough plastic texture which is great for claw grip users.

Besides the interchangeable grips, the Logitech G9x also comes with a weight-tuning system which you can fine-tune to your liking. Logitech has provide four 4g and four 7g weights encased in a simple metal box.

You can adjust the weight placement to customize the feel. Simply remove the interchangeable grip and the spring-loaded weight tray at the back of the mouse and insert the weights. Push the weights into the tray, assemble the mouse back together and it's done. The G9x weighs over 150 grams without any weight and to help it glide more easily, Logitech has put in extra large polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) feet.

The Logitech G9x uses a unique "Micro-gear" technology which offers dual modes of scrolling - Ratchet mode which feels very light and gives off a solid mechanical feedback with an audible click with each notch; and Hyper-fast mode that delivers a smooth and effortless scrolling. To switch between modes, simply push the Microgear button located at the base of the mouse. We feel that the Microgear button should be placed on the top of the mouse for an easier reach instead of having to flip the mouse every time to change between modes.

The Logitech G9x has a tilting scroll-wheel which is rarely seen on gaming mice. The tilting scroll-wheel allows users to scroll horizontally which is very helpful for applications such as web-surfing. For gaming, users can simply program the tilt function to reload weapons, voice chat or even intricate macros. One complaint we had with the scroll-wheel is the difficulty in pressing the middle-mouse button.

Near the left of the mouse are a pair of horizontally place buttons labelled "+" and "-" to increase the Dots Per Inch (DPI) level or decrease it respectively. The buttons are narrow and flushed against the curvature of the mouse which may prove difficult for users with large fingers. A DPI level LED indicator is located just underneath the DPI button which is useful for users to keep track of the DPI level.

On the left side, Logitech G9x has two buttons which are by default to go back and forward through web pages and documents. The side buttons are well-positioned for users to reach. The mouse also comes with a well-braided cable which shows the high quality standards that Logitech have put into their gaming series.

The G9x comes pre-set with three profiles; General, Gaming and Productivity. Using the Logitech software suite called "Setpoint", the profiles can be personalized with a variety of setting to choose from. Starting from the basics, there's profile naming and LED color customization for each profile. A total of five profiles can be saved onto the on-board memory so that you can use it on other PC without having to install Setpoint. The Logitech G9x has a total of nine buttons which can be fully programmable.

The Logitech G9x comes with a sensor with five fully-adjustable DPI levels which you can set from as low as 200 to a maximum of 5700 DPI. The X-Y axis sensitivity can also be adjusted independently. Setpoint gives you the option of adjusting mouse acceleration and angle-snapping whereby most gamers usually set acceleration to zero and turn off angle-snapping. The last item on the list is polling rate which can set from 125Hz to 1000Hz. You can also find the scrolling setting page for adjusting the vertical and horizontal scrolling speed. Using the Macro manager, macro can recorded easily with Setpoint simple to use interface.

    Performance:

The Logitech performs phenomenally in games without any jittering or skipping. The DPI buttons clearly shine when playing first-person shooter (FPS) games like Call Of Duty:Black Ops and Team Fortess 2 as you can easily lower the DPI level to get clearer shots and and raise the DPI for running around the map. Furthermore, with the side buttons, you can use for quick melee-attack and voice chat. The Logitech G9x has a clear advantage in FPS games. On real-time strategy and massive multi-player online role-playing games, the gaming mouse can be programmed with macros to assist you in casting magic or perform complex combos. The Logitech G9x is clearly designed for gaming. Even for productivity uses such as image editing on Photoshop, the DPI buttons allow users to lower the DPI level to do precision touch-ups on picture and raise the DPI for normal uses.

    Conclusion:

With its interchangeable grip, custom profiles and settings, the Logitech G9x is a great mouse that can be personalized specifically to your liking. Although the Micro-gear technology is rather unique, it's proven very useful especially for scrolling through long documents. The G9x performs very well whether it is for gaming or work. It's only downfall is its weight. Even with its large polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) feet, its weight causes the mouse not to glide as effortlessly as other gaming mice. The additional weight give users the option to add heft to their mouse but a heavy mouse will cause the mouse feet to wear faster. Even though the G9x lacks the fancifully looks of gaming mice, at its current MSRP of US$79.99, it is competitively-priced with features that gaming mice within the price range lack. The Logitech G9x is available in authorized retailers.
