We received the Trigger keyboard inside a non-retail, pre-production packaging, therefore we cannot really comment on the actual retail packaging of the product. If however CoolerMaster decides to use the same box and simply add artwork, the protection it would offer during transportation should be excellent.

Inside the package we found the connection cable and the large detachable wrist rest. The USB cable has gold-plated connectors and is braided, enhancing both its durability and the aesthetics of the keyboard.

The CoolerMaster Storm is a grey, serious looking keyboard imitating a high tech militaristic theme. The grey surface of the keyboard is strong plastic, with a metallic plate beneath the keys and a “rubberized” black edge. It is the rubberized surfaces which give the Trigger an extraordinary feeling; however, they are not actually coated with rubber as CoolerMaster suggests but corona treated plastic, which is a good thing as the life expectancy of a corona treated surface is excellent.

Five macro keys can be seen towards the right edge of the keyboard. These keys can be programmed through the keyboard’s software to perform any keys sequence and/or other actions. Unfortunately, although the software does support profiles, you cannot change between profiles “on-the-fly” as with several other gaming keyboards. The innovative part is that the macro functions are now stored inside the 64KB memory of the keyboard itself, allowing their immediate use each time the system powers on.

CoolerMaster replaced the Windows keys with keys featuring their Storm series logo. The key serves the same function but can also be used to access secondary controls through the F keys, as described below.

The F keys offer a variety of other controls as well. By holding down the ex-Windows key and pressing the corresponding F key, the user has control over the keyboard’s lighting, common multimedia actions (Pause, Stop, Play, FB and FF) and volume (Mute, volume up and volume down).

CoolerMaster placed six large anti-skid pads beneath the keyboard. Given the keyboard’s weight and the quality of the pads, it is next to impossible to unwillingly move the keyboard while it is sitting on a desk.

The micro USB connector for the USB cable can be found at the rear of the keyboard. Next to it CoolerMaster installed a small two USB 2.0 port hub, allowing the connection of low power equipment and peripherals. In order to use power hungry devices such as external disk drives, CoolerMaster installed a common 5V DC connector but there is no AC to DC adapter included with the keyboard.

At the top right side of the keyboard and right above the three common LEDs, CoolerMaster subtly etched the series name. The three indicator LEDs of the Trigger are red.

CoolerMaster offers the Trigger keyboard with four kinds of Cherry MX switches, Red, Black, Blue and Brown. We received the Black version, with the linear, non-tactile switches which require the most force to actuate when compared to any other Cherry switch. The Black MX switches give an outstanding feel during both gaming and typing, although fatigue could become a problem after several consequent hours of computer use.

Right above each and every switch CoolerMaster installed a bright red LED. The characters on the keys light up, with little backlight bleeding around the keys.

CoolerMaster programmed three lighting functions in the Trigger keyboard. The first setting is the “gaming” setting, with only the WASD, arrow and macro keys lighting up.

The second setting is the “normal” setting, with every single key of the keyboard lighting up. The third and final setting is the “strobe” setting, which cannot be captured by a simple picture. In this setting, the LEDs will slowly light up and fade, creating a strobe effect which is certainly impressive but we think that most people would find that setting to be extremely annoying.

CoolerMaster’s top of the line products rarely are disappointing and the CMStorm Trigger is no exception. The quality of the keyboard is fantastic and the soft feel of the corona treated surfaces is indescribable. CoolerMaster claims that the Trigger is virtually unbreakable and even posted promotional videos with it being run over by cars and small trucks in order to prove their point; we are going to take their word for it and will not run the keyboard over with a car, since we realize that if a car finds its way over your desktop the durability of the keyboard should be the least of your worries.

Besides the “rubberized” surfaces, the onboard memory which stores the macro functions and the design are what makes this keyboard unique. Although it is “just another” QWERTY keyboard with only 5 extra macro keys, through a good choice of colors, lighting and a rugged design CoolerMaster succeeded on making this keyboard looking unique and managed to replicate a gaming theme very well. We are certain that this keyboard will be loved by enthusiasts, even those who are not hardcore gamers.

Unfortunately, the CoolerMaster Trigger is not a perfect product. The worst enemy of this keyboard is its own price tag, which is way higher than most casual PC users and even the majority of enthusiasts would be willing to pay for a keyboard, no matter how good it may be. We found the CoolerMaster Trigger retailing for 115€ (190$ SGD at the time of this review), a price over twice as high as common gaming keyboards and relatively high even for a high quality mechanical keyboard. Nonetheless, if you are a hardcore enthusiast who would like to enjoy the superiority of mechanical keyboards and would not mind to pay something extra for a superior product, the quality and feel of the CoolerMaster Trigger will not let you down.
