Poet/playwright Vim Nadera and Alvin Buenaventura of Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society, Inc.(FILCOLS ), hold a free seminar on Intellectual Property Rights in Turtle's Nest Book Cafe on August 21, 2010. Registration starts at 9:00 am.


FILCOLS advocates reproduction rights among literary, dramatic, scientific, and educational institutions in the country. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, copyright-based industries contribute 4.82% to our annual GDP. "Copyright employs people, " says Buenaventura. "Thus, we should protect and promote this industry." Learn more how authors, musicians, and visual artists can safeguard their reprographic rights and what FILCOLS is doing to help them.

Alvin Buenaventura of Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society, Inc. will also talk about the copyright as the artist's human rights. He will discuss how writers and musicians can protect themselves from copyright infringements.

At present, Vim Nadera is the Director of the UP Institute of Creative Writing. He is a prolific author, editor, critic, and translator. He has a column in Manila Bulletin.

FAIGAO WORKSHOP @ 26

The Faigao Memorial Annual Writers Workshop of Cebu will be held this year at the Talamban Retreat House of the University of San Carlos from 29-31 October 2010.

Fifteen slots are reserved for writing fellows selected from among applicants who are asked to submit entries in Cebuano or English - a short story, 3 poems or 1 short play.

The workshop, named after the poet Cornelio Faigao, is now in its 26th year. Many of its alumni have received writing grants or prizes, among them Ernie Lariosa, Don Pagusara, Erma Cuizon, Tem Adlawan, Gremer Chan Reyes, Carlos Cortes, Lam Ceballos, Ester Tapia, Myke Obenieta, Adonis Durado, Cora Almerino, Yul Aparece, Bambi Beltran, Januar Yap, Arlaine Obenieta, Cindy Velasquez, Jona Bering and Dindin Villarino.

Among the regular workshop panelists are three who will also serve this year: Resil Mojares, Merlie Alunan and Linda Alburo.

I met HP Lovecraft about two years ago and before him, all I knew about classical horror were Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and some works by Edgar Allan Poe (which I found gloomy but not scary).

I think the first Lovecraft story that really got me hooked into the man's terrible imagination was DAGON. I found his writing similar to my longtime idol, O. Henry--fluid and florid with words. If words were water, the reader would be drowned. After that I enjoyed "drowning" myself in the darkness of his other works, like the Dunwich Horror, the Shadow over Innsmouth, and Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family



He's most well-known for being the progenitor of the Cthulu horror mythos--about ancient dark gods that once ruled over humanity even way beyond pagan times. Most of his works takes place in a world terrorized on the edges by these monstrous entities.

I'm mentioning HP Lovecraft now since we're closely approaching Halloween (Octoberfest doesn't hold any attraction for me) and I'm thinking of inviting you iStoryan writers to share your favorite horror or gothic writer/author/poet and present some links to their works for our reading pleasure.

Throughout the month of October, I'll be posting other authors and writers profile in the horror genre that I think you'd like to know and by November I'll be writing up some stories or works in tribute to such writers. I invite you to do the same.

The second author I'd like to feature on our weekly countdown to Halloween is Japanese manga author/comic artist Junji Ito.

Don't let the kind face and smile fool you, this man has among the darkest imaginations I've encountered so far. His horror writings and illustrations are on a whole different level which I firmly believe his works would become true classics of the world.

Junji Ito's body of work is well-known for the horrific, reality-bending masterpieces such "Uzumaki" (Spiral), "Tomie" and "Gyo".

We are pleased to announce that the Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists), on the occasion of its 53rd year, will hold its annual literature conference on December 4-5, 2010 in Montebello Villa Hotel, Cebu City, Philippines.


The two-day conference, the theme of which is “Solidarity in Literature without Borders,” aims to gather not only Filipino writers in the archipelago, but also writers from Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas. These writers will compose the six literary sessions. They are expected to share with each other and their audience excerpts from their recently completed work or work in progress, and talk about their literary concerns relevant to the theme. The Jose Rizal Lecture, the highlight of the conference, will be delivered by eminent writer and intellectual Dr. Resil Mojares.

I knew I had always wanted to be a writer from the moment I learned the rudiments of grammar and literature. The only thing I was not sure about was whether I could write for an audience. I love expressing myself in poems, free verses, mostly. I am my biggest writing critic so every time the urge to share my written works arrive, I am always apprehensive. One thing that I do love most about this passion is that I am able to rub it on my students. At least with them, I see part of my dreams realized.
