I've just been to the ce-gnu-lug meeting this evening. There were plenty of discussions on how we can help out I-cafes on installing and deploying linux. The objective was to have an entirely open source solution to the net cafe setup. The current plan of action are enumerated below:

    Select the appropriate Linux Distribution:

    1) Fedora Core 4
    2) Ubuntu
    3) Debian
    4) etc.

    Identify Applications:

    1) Identify which applications are mostly/commonly used in I-cafes
    2) If such applications can run on top of Wine/Cedega - and this is to protect you current investment in software. Since some icafes may have already purchased licenses for such (apps like photoshop, dreamweaver, can run on top of wine).
    3) If No.2 is not possible, propose an alternative Linux based application simillar in function - i.e. Yahoo IM's Linux version is crippled (no webcam support, audibles, avatars, etc), but there is an open source version for Yahoo which is capable of doing such - gyach-E.
    4) Provide an installation/image CD ready to be deployed in i-cafes.

Linux on Games and online games:

There were already a lot of DirectX based games and online games which can run on top of a Linux/Wine/Cedega platform. Demographically we need to Identify which games are commonly/mostly played in I-cafes here in Cebu, including online games in the likes of Ragna, gunbound, etc. The goal is for the group to provide scripts to ease maintaenance and configuration of these games running in Linux/Wine/Cedega.

One of the things that the group has decided is to host a game fest on an I-cafe running entirely on Linux/Wine/Cedega, the setup is to prove and demonstrate proof of concept that Linux can and is capable of running Windows based games and online games (though not all) - we also need to gather info from gamers (who are not familiar with Linux) on the usability of our setup. We will be inviting i-cafe owners to this event - we still need to identify where and when this can be held, hopefully towards the end of this month.

    Other stuff:

Timers/Admin etc applications - There were already several open source apps that cater to these, we just need to choose which one is more appropriate.

If you need more information about this event or would like to help us - please post your questions to CE_GNU_LUG yahoo group.

Â* Â* Â*Linux is not the only solution to your problem.. linux only help you to minimized your expense, because to set a linux pc running all popular games and online games is a very hard task and only few of the online games and pc games can run in linux....Â* So myÂ* advice is buy a licenses OS first like a half of your PC numbers .. example you have 10 pc's.. just buy 5 original OS for the pc for the mean time so that u can still operate your business...Â* the other 5 pc.. u slowly convert in into linux...Â* because its up to you if you like all your computer running in linux but its not an easy task its a very hard task especially to a newbie or even Our linux expert in our group because they have thier own job its take a lot of time .. except if you reaLLy hired a Linux proffessional to set up your cafe of course it would be easy for you and the Linux guy coz thats his job.. But for us we take it slowly and shorly so if your planning to beat the dealine of the raid on Sept 16 .. Linux is not the answer because you need time to set upÂ* and learned.. ..Â* OKay its only an advice its up to u to take it seriously....

Â* Â* Â*Heres another one... Im also an i-cafe shop owner but my plans is i only buy few license windows then the rest is linux and the server . i will set it up slowly and introduced to our customer about linux ... So that our Shop will not close because of the fear of the raid... IF you really dont have the money .. Sell your 1 pc.. bargain . Â* and the money u collected buy a license OS ....Â* Its really the time countÂ* & games and customer if they support ur cafe or go to other shop has windows OS.. Lets see .. nobody knows....Â* Â*

    hi,

just to add, www.cedega.com is the company that made the software to run ms games on linux, it's based on WINE(windows emulator http://www.winehq.com/) but is geared towards creating advance API to run games(esp. directx).

If you're an i-cafe owner you might as well try to browse the cedega list of windows games running on linux,
have a look at http://www.transgaming.com/ (cedege and transgaming is the same).

hopefully a handfull of ce_gnu_lug(including me) people will be testing the most common games used on i-cafes, then after that game fest or install fest will be scheduled.

    thanks
